May 20, 2003:
Hello there Al:

Just to let you know about a Collins family history web site that I have
started up.
It is not at a high state of development yet...but it's a start.
Regards,

Kevin
October 24, 2002: Here are some great photographs taken by Kevin Collins during his visit to Ireland in the fall of 2002. (See detailed family tree of Timothy Collins below).
John TURNER and Susan WHELAN
Copy of e-mails received from Marilyn Dwyer: Hi Al Just had a wonderful time exploring your site. It was great. I am a descendant of John Turner & Susan Whelan and also Timothy Collins. First I would like to correct your entries on John Turner, if I may. John Turner is buried, along with his wife Susan Whelan are buried in St. John's RC Cemetery at Enniskerry of which I purchased their book. It lists Grave #99 "In loving memory of John Turner died Dec. 26, 1895 aged 95 years. Also his wife Susan Whelan died Sept. 15, 1889 aged 77 yrs. Nicholas Turner (their son) died Dec.6, 1915 aged 73 yrs. Also his wife Sarah Hassett died Jan. 11, 1932 aged 80 yrs. William Turner (I believe this is Nicholas's son who died of TB) born Feb. 3, 1875, died Aug. 11, 1897 aged 22 yrs. My connection: John Turner & Susan Whelan; their son Nicholas 1842-1915 married Sarah Hassett 1852-1832; their son John (Jack) 1877-1953 married Clara Emily Collins 1887-1968; their daughter Marjorie Turner 1916-1982 married Ivor Smith 1916-1986 and their daughter (me) Marilyn married Terence Dwyer. I do have more on the Turners as well. Secondly, In the book "Bowesville: A Place to Remember" by Grace Johnston (available at the Gloucester Historical Society & Museum) listed Patrick Collins from Tinlague, Cork as being married to Ellen Finn from Bandon, Cork and Timothy Collins from Tinlague, Cork being married to Mary Cain from Tinlague, so now I am confused because you have the wives reversed. Could you tell me where your source is from, perhaps the cemetery where they are buried? I am a descendant of Timothy Collins, whose son Patrick married Sarah Reynolds; their daughter Clara Emily Collins 1887-1968 married John (Jack) Turner 1877-1953 (my maternal grandparents) I am trying to get as much Turner and Collins information as I can before the end of July as we are having a small reunion of cousins for the first time ever and I hope to have something to show them. I would appreciate any help you can give me and thank you so much for sharing on the net. I had planned to spend 15 minutes having a look and now it's been an hour and a half. Sincerely...........Marilyn PS Just to confuse you some more, I saw a Thomas O'Meara listed and wonder if he was a son of Philip O'Meara and Judy Slattery O'Meara from Limerick? Judy emigrated in the 1840's with four of her sons after her husband died and they settled in Nepean and later Wellington St. in Ottawa where she lived with her daughter Bridget. The paternal side of my family is Smith - O'Meara. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Al Thanks for your messages and I will answer your questions one at a time. First let me explain that I am fairly new at this. I started collecting information on my husbands and my families back in the 1980's. Last winter I started sorting a putting everthing in binders to get it organized and most of the information to this date has been from family members and I am just now finding other sources, so bear with me. You asked if John Turner and Susan Whelan were from Cork - I have no idea. On your Web page - Susan Whelan is still incorrect. She was born in 1812 and Died: 1889 (77 years) - The spelling I had for Ellen Finn wife of Patrick, was FIN Were Patrick & Timothy Collins brothers - yes. I was told Patrick and Ellen settled in Bowesville in 1830 and Timothy bought a piece of Patrick's land about four years later. What I have of the Turners: John Turner - 1800-1895 Buried St. John's Cem. Enniskerry Wife: Susan Whelan - 1816-1889 Buried St. John's Cem. Enniskerry Children: 1. Elizabeth 1838-? m. Here's a large contribution from Kevin Collins, Feb. 17, 2001: Al: I have attached a GED file for the descendants of Timothy and Patrick Collins. I don't have their parents' names. The list goes down to my generation...and Marilyn's as well as I believe we are on the same parallel (second cousin, once removed). All of this is still a work in progress...I guess it is ever thus. Hope this is useful, and will elicit other contributions to fill out the picture. Dear Al, My name is Bradley Gerard Collins, Grandson of Patrick Percy and Theresa Mary (Tierney) Collins. I can't tell you how excited I was at finding your site today. I have been searching for information on relatives for some time. I am new to the internet and computers, and it is taking me a while to surf for information. I tried to send an e-mail to a Kevin Collins, however the link was not working. (fixed now... Al). I would very much like to help any way I can. Let me know by return e-mail if you would like me to send you some information on my family, to add to the family tree. It appears that the majority of the Collins Family tree was set up by Kevin Collins and If you have his e-mail address please ask him to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you both. Sincerely, Brad Collins ------------- Hi Brad: Thanks for letting me know about the broken e-mail link. I believe it's working now. I'll add your e-mail address to the page later today. By the way, a Thomas Tierney witnessed the signing of my GGGrandfather's will in 1863. There were several Tierney families. Any idea who this Thomas Tierney was? Thanks, ... Al ------------------ Hi Al, Happy St. Patrick's Day. At this point I really have no idea who Thomas Tierney was, I am just starting to find family. And have just obtained a copy of my fathers birth record and that is how I found out who his parents were. I will certainly keep Thomas Tierney in mind, and if I come across anyone by that name I will be sure to let you know. I really had no idea of how extensive our roots were in the Ottawa area. I am looking forward to having contact with other family members and thank you for adding my Email address to the site. I have not heard from Kevin yet, but I am sure I will soon. Sincerely, Brad
December 29, 2001 From Taylor Kennedy I was completing inputting information with regards to the Tierney Clan. Bridget Theresa (Tierney) Collins who married Patrick Percy Collins, is the daughter of Timothy Tierney & Catherine Houlahan. Timothy is the son of John Tierney and Bridget Nash. Timothy was the brother of Richard Tierney mentioned in the book "The Kennedy Story" who married Catherine Brophy, daughter of Michael Brophy & Mary Fermoyle. They were the authors' (Desmond Kennedy) maternal grandparents. Take care Taylor
January 25, 2002: -----Original Message----- From: Gary Mair [mailto:garymair@home.com] Sent: January 19, 1999 11:34 PM To: ag.lewis@sympatico.ca; kcollins@web.net Subject: McKenna / Collins Marriage Hi Al and Kevin: We are currently researching the McKenna family and found a Jane who Married a Collins and saw your listing. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Gary Mair =========================== Hello Gary: I have a number of McKennas in my family tree. The closest to myself is my paternal grandmother - Elizabeth McKenna (1851-1923). She married Matthew Collins (1837-1914) and they had 10 children: Margaret (who died at 15 months), John, James, William, Mary, Walter, Charles, Michael, Margaret and George (my father). Elizabeth's parents were Bernard McKenna (1823-1890) whose first wife was Margaret Corrigan (1821-1856). They had seven other children - Ann, John, Thomas, Jane, James, Margaret and Michael. Margaret Corrigan died at age 35 in the same year that Michael was born - so it is quite possible that she died in child-birth. One of these children - Jane (1840-1912) married Timothy Collins (1836-1916) and they had one child - Patrick Oliver Collins (1878-1947). Another of the children - Margaret (1855-1935) married John Davy, and they had six children - James William, Barnett, Herbert, Patrick, Michael Harry and Mary Violet. These two children - Jane and Margaret - are, I believe, the ones you identified in your e-mails to me. My information on the other children is sketchy. Ann married a Patrick Daly and they had 6 children. John married a Kate McCooye. For Thomas, I have no wife's name, but a reference that they had 5 children. However, that is not the end of the story. Bernard McKenna remarried when his wife died at a young age. He married Mary Collins (1832-1923) who was Matthew Collins' sister. I have only one child in my records for them - James McKenna - who died quite young (1876-1895). I have no information on Bernard McKenna's parents - my records indicate he had one sister (no first name) who married a man named Moore. The only other McKenna I have in my family tree is Mary Irene McKenna (1892-1944) who was married to John Carmel Hammill (1897-1962). I don't have a direct relationship for her with the other McKenna's - although there may well be one. She is in my family tree because John Carmel Hammill's second wife was Mary Mildred Collins who was Matthew Collins' grand niece. Anyway, it is quite a job to sort out all the interconnections as families married into each other. I don't have to look any further than my father - he and his brother married my mother and her sister. If I can assist you further, just let me know. Kevin Collins
March 20, 2003: Hi Ellen and Kevin: The marriage of Timothy Collins recorded at Notre Dame in 1831 shows Timothy Collins as being from Black Rapids and his bride is from "Notch of the Mountains". Finally, in a book called "Sights and Surveys, Two Diarists on the Rideau Canal", by Edwin Welch of the Historical Society of Ottawa (1979) I've located "Notch of the Mountains" - if you stand on the Bank Street Bridge over the canal and look west towards Dow's Lake, the steep banks on either side, a stones throw from the bridge, were called "The Notch of the Mountains". This term is used in the records of Notre Dame (which Ellen has) and also in early Bytown newspapers. The "Deep Cut", also referenced often in the Notre Dame records was on the west side of the Canal at Somerset Street, across from Ottawa University. This has been bugging me for a long time! ... Al _____________________________________ also posted on March 20, 2003: Ellen and Al: Thank you folks for this fascinating new information. I have never delved into the Notre Dame records myself, and your combined efforts are much appreciated. Did these records every mention parent's names? I have never been able to determine Timothy's father's name. Again, thanks. December 13, 2005: Hi Al: Here's the jpeg version of the Collins Brothers Band who played in and around Carlsbad Springs and Gloucester 1915. They were the sons of Matthew Collins (b. 1837) and Elizabeth McKenna (b. 1851) both of whom were born in Gloucester but who were pioneers of Carlsbad Springs. Turner Roots
Your John Turner and my great-grandmother, Mary Ann Turner, were siblings. John Turner married Suzanne Whallan at Notre-Dame-de-Foy on Oct 20, 1835. John’s parents were Michael Turner and Elizabeth McDonald of County Wexford. Suzanne‘s parents were the late Edward Whallan and the late Marthe Johns (?) also of Wexford. John’s sister, Mary Ann Turner married John Fitzsimons / Fitzsimmons from Wexford, at Notre-Dame-de-Ottawa on Feb 6 1834. They lived in Ottawa, Syracuse, NY, USA, and then Sillery, Quebec where John died in 1844. Their daughter Ellen was their only child to marry. She married John Quigley. They died at Detroit, Michigan. Mary, a widow with 4 children, remarried on Jun 23, 1846 at ND de Foy. Her second husband was Peter Dempsey also from Wexford. Peter died at Sillery Nov 8, 1874. Their two daughters married. Bridget married Patrick Kerr on Aug 10, 1866 at Sillery. Catherine married Morgan Nolan, s/o Andrew & Elisabeth Nolan, on Aug 17, 1875 at Notre Dame de Ottawa. Morgan Nolan worked in the lumber trade in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, USA, & possibly earlier in the Pembroke area. They are buried in Superior, WI. Was it just a coincidence that John T.’s daughter, Elizabeth, gave the name “Morgan” to two of her sons? Mary Ann Turner’s death was recorded under the name “Mary Dempsey” at Pembroke, Renfrew County, Ont. on Nov 29, 1887. The informant of her death was J. M. Nolan. When on Dec 5, 1877 she was buried at ND-de-Foy the priest recorded her place of death as Pembroke. I also have some data on John Turner’s family that I gathered in the 1980’s that I will check futher. I should add that I was directed to your web site by one of John's descendants, Jo Ann Cook. Good Hunting, Jim
August 15, 2006: Just wanted to add to Jim Kerr's e-mail on the Turners. I am a descendent of John (also referred to as Nick) Turner and Susan Whelan of Osgoode. John was an Osgoode farmer and in the 1861 census there are seven children listed from age 10 to age 23. The oldest was Elizabeth Turner. A Moses Nolan, age 26, from Templeshambo, Wexford is also listed as living in their home. He was a school teacher and received free room and board at the farms of school children. It was love at first sight for Moses with Elizabeth. John Turner refused permission to marry and they walked 16 miles to Ottawa. They married at Notre Dame and rented a house on Murray St. Elizabeth ran a boarding house for shanty men and Moses gave private lessons to business men. Later, he ran a bar at 104 Murray. His son Patrick J. Nolan became a druggist and Mayor of Ottawa in 1934 and 1935. I am one of the granddaughters of P.J. Nolan. Elizabeth Turner-Nolan died Dec. 16, 1918. She is buried at Notre Dame Cemetery in Ottawa. Thanks for your Information, Marilyn and Jim. ... Jo Ann Turner Nolan Cook
