David STEWART / STUART & Margaret McCONNELL
Early Settlers in Eastern Ontario, Canada

New July 3, 2007:

Hello Al,

Thanks for adding the Stewart/Stuart family to your web site. With the help of 2 recent
family connections, I have information regarding all descendants of this family,
with the exception of first born son, William Stewart (b. Abt. 1851).

Grateful for any corrections.

Genealogy 'wish-list' of 4 unanswered conundrums in need of assistance:

**If someone has access to the actual microfilm records of Holy Cross Parish,
Kemptville, I'd appreciate a look-up of the marriage for David STUART to
Margret MCCONNELL from August 25, 1850. Need parents names and each party's
places of birth.

**Death registration information regarding Margaret (Mcconnell) Stewart/Stuart,
who died 18 Jul 1880.

**Even after a very thorough search through the usual resources, I cannot find
the marriage record for David Stewart jr. to Emma Peterson from 1895. It is
possible they were married at either Kemptville, Merrickville, or Marlborough Township.
I have not located a christening record for him either, not sure if he was
Catholic or married in the Catholic church. Help please!

**David and Margaret arrived in Marlborough before the 1861 census was taken.
What year did they arrive in Marlborough and where were they living just before
and during the first years of their marriage?

Thanks again.
Jane, Las Vegas, Nevada.

NOTES: In the 1900 census, Minneapolis, MN., David's birth is listed as Dec 1864 which would make him age 35 during June when the census was taken. His 3rd son, Mansel, was born the next month. This birth reg'n also says David's name is 'Chas', and is 35 years old (maybe Charles David?). Unable to locate David's christening and marriage record despite exhaustive and thorough search. In the 1911 census for Milestone, Saskatchewan, David's birth date is entered as 'unknown' and religion, Catholic. See more about this couple below, in Notes. NOTES: In a book entitled "From Prairie Plow 'Til Now", a history book about Milestone, Saskatchewan, the entry for David and Emma Stewart indicates that he was born in Merrickville, Ontario in 1869 and grew up there. It then goes on to say David married Emma Peterson at Kemptville, Ontario in 1895. The family moved to Minnesota in 1899 where David worked for the railroad, then on to Saskatchewan in 1902. David was known in Saskatchewan as an 'expert farmer'. He was a quiet man, well liked by all. His wife Emma took in sewing for others. Genevieve Stewart b: Mar 1914, Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., Minnesota. d: May 1914, Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., Minnesota. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GENERAL NOTES: I am not sure when David Stewart/Stuart and his wife Margaret Mcconnell went to live in the Marlborough area. They don't show in the 1851 census for Marlborough, which was taken on 12 Jan 1852. Since they were married at Kemptville in the Holy Cross church in August of 1850, it seems likely they lived somewhere close. The first child, William, is not christened at Holy Cross, nor were some of the other children. Perhaps not all were RC, in fact, daughter Margaret Ann "Annie", was of the Church of England religion at the time of her first marriage. The children, even when grown, were not entirely certain of where their father David Stewart was born. The information varies: Cornwall, Ireland, Scotland, Canada/English, and Canada/French. Most agree their mother, Margaret Mcconnell, was born in Ireland. She may have emigrated to Ontario with her parents, as one of the Peter Robinson settlers in 1823 ??. Regarding religion, David is listed in the 1871 census as "Reformed Presbyterian". In 1881 he is Catholic on the census. On his second marriage to Ellen Lennon as well as death registrations his religion is Church of England. David's son-in-law, Michael Valcour, was the informant on his death registration in 1899. He gave David's birthplace as 'Cornwall'. I spent considerable time looking through surnames being researched in Cornwall, England. Stewart [and other spelling variants] is not a common name there. ... Jane
