December 19, 2005: Thanks to Frank Watters for the following: Hi Al; While going through the Ste Madeleine de Rigaud, Qc. Drouin microlm, no. 1353, I found the baptism of John SLONE (sic), baptised on 17 June, 1827, born on the 14 June 1827, s/o Peter SLONE and Mary Flanigan. The godfather was Daniel Bonar?? and the godmother was Anne Daly. The register did not note where the family lived. John then was a brother to Patrick married to Josephine Routhier This could be added to the family file in Bytown or Bust. Frank

February 15, 2006: My ancestors are John McNeely who married a Mary Sloan. Mary was born approximately 1803 and died in 1853 and is buried at St. Brigid's cemetery on the River Road, Osgoode Township. I suspect Mary is another member of this Sloan family just due to local. John McNeely and Mary Sloan farmed in Manotick on Lot 6 Conc. A. Have any of you run across the McNeely connection in your Sloan research. She may be a sister to Patrick who married Josephine Routhier and a daughter to Patrick Sloan and Mary Flanigan?????? ... Mary Quinn
August 15, 2006: I'm getting caught up on some of my historical interests. I was browsing your website today and read Mary Quinn's request of Feb. 15, 2006. I am also a descendant of John McNeely and Mary Sloan. I only just discovered her last name this year. I've found interesting information in the Notre Dame Parish records and in the assessment rolls for Gloucester Township. from 1830 to 1840. I've been to the Manotick house of one of John's offspring, not the original log cabin but the one after that and had an interesting exchange with its owner. I'm also digging up information from logging records which could give me more leads. Your Sloan information may be another lead. Send me an e-mail so that we can exchange information sometime. My descendance is as follows: John McNeely & Mary Sloane, Francis McNeely & Mary Elizabeth Lafontaine, Thomas McNeely and Sarah Morin, Therese McNeely & Conrad Boyer, then me, Gerard Boyer. Besides the McNeelys, I've just completed the Morin family line from Cumberland and I will send that infor on to your website as soon as I touch it up for sharing. ... Gerard Boyer

February 26, 2007: Hi Garry: I recently read a book by Michael O`Brien titled " A Cry In Stone ". In it he states that his 2nd great grandmother was Josephine Routhier an Algonquin First Nation from the Maniwaki Indian Reserve. http://www.ignatiusinsight.com/features/mbrien_intervw1_july04.asp Do you know if this can be supported ? Josephine was my 2nd great grandmother also & i can not make the connection. My lineage is through Patrick Sloan. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tom Fox

December 20, 2011: Here is a fascinating article by Deirdre McEvoy of County Down, Ireland, who has connected some of the families from Kilbroney Parish, County Down, who are listed on the McCabe List in 1829, to descendants here in Canada. Thanks very much for this material! Hi Everybody I only recently came across ‘The McCabe List’ and was fascinated to find amongst the list a Peter Sloan and a Bernard Magee, both from my home parish of Kilbroney (Rostrevor), County Down, Northern Ireland. I am an amateur genealogist and have a lot of one name databases on families who lived in this parish. I saw Bernard’s name on the List and in my Magee database I have a Bernard Magee and Bridget Flanagan who had 3 children and then no more, which usually means that that couple emigrated. I was really pleased to see your posting on www.bytown.net which confirmed my theory that the Bernard mentioned in the List is the same Bernard married to Bridget Flanagan. The reason why I had a Magee database is that many of the Magee descendents emigrated to America and they contacted me to see if I could find their ancestors. I also have a Sloan database for Kilbroney and I have the marriage of Peter Sloan and Mary Flanagan as well as the baptisms of some of their children. Mary and Bridget were most likely sisters families and it is more than likely that the 2 families emigrated together. Kilbroney parish had 2 Roman Catholic churches, one in Rostrevor and one in the sub parish of Killowen which is an area 2 – 3 miles north of Rostrevor village, right on Carlingford Lough. The Magee, Sloan and Flanagan families all lived in Killowen sub parish and they would have worshipped in the small church in Killowen but the baptismal, marriage and burial records are all in one amalgamated register for Kilbroney which are held in the church in Rostrevor. With regard to Peter Sloan and his wife Mary Flanagan, here is what I have on them : On 3 Feb 1811, Peter Sloan married Mary Flanagan in the parish of Kilbroney. Witnesses : Daniel Sloan, Bryan Flanagan (Note: Bryan/Brian in those days was a nickname for Bernard). Baptismal Date Child Parents Sponsors 12 May 1812 Margret Peter Sloan, Mary Flanagan James Cull, Mary Flanagan 7 Mar 1814 Elenor Peter Sloan, Mary Flanagan John Roarke, Mary Roarke 7 Apr 1816 Patt Peter Sloan, Mary Flanagan Peter Connell, Mary Sloan 24 Nov 1819 Mary Peter Sloan, Mary Flanigan Peter? Sloan, Bridget Flanigan 31 May 1825 Bernard Peter Sloan, Mary Flanagan James Cull, Mary Brennan There is a large gap between 1819 and 1825, so there may have been at least 2 children born to this couple who are not in the baptismal register. As I mentioned earlier, there are many children missing from these registers due to reasons unknown. It is more than likely that Peter and his family emigrated with Bernard and his family c. 1827/1828. Unlike the Magees, Kilbroney was and still is full of Sloans so it would be very hard to link them up. The List does mention a nephew Peter Sloan living in Kilbroney but there were quite a lot of Peter Sloans living there at the time so it would be hard to know who was the right one. I hope the above is of some help to you and if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me. Kind regards Deirdre McEvoy
September 17, 2012: Hi Al and Sloan relatives; From the Exaltation of the Holy Cross church, Kemptville, Grenville County, On.: On 14 July 1844 was baptized Mary, daughter of Patrick Sloan and Josephte Finroutté (yet another variation of the Routhier name!). Sponsors were Patrick Racce or Raece (maybe RICE?) and Bridget Flannigan. (This is the Mary Sloan who married Samuel Laporte) Perhaps Bridget would be sister to Mary Flannigan? I also found the baptism of a Maria Flannigan, d/o Mitchel Flannigan and Mary Conroy, 2 months old, on 20 October 1844, with James and Christiana Delacy as sponsors. I don’t have anything on this Mitchel Flannigan, but perhaps family members might recognize him. ; Baptism of John Kyley, 8 days old, on 15 June 1845 s/o Edward Kyley (Kealey ?) and Mary Magee / McGee with John McCarney and Catherine A. O’Neal as sponsors; Baptism of Marie Louisa Berthranté (sic), 8 months old on 7 June 1846, d/o Joseph Berthranté and Louisa Routé with Paschal Jarbo and Mary Valance as sponsors (possibly Venance). Kemptville covered Oxford Township as well as North Gower at that time. Since I’ve seen references to the McGee family, I kept my eyes open for them but that was all I could find. I wasn’t able to find any other reference to Bridget Flannigan other than at the baptism of Mary Sloan above, but I ran out of time when I had reached the mid-1846 records. The above is from FamilySearch.org, Roman Catholic church Records of Ontario, Kemptville, Grenville county. More information might be available to those who take the time to look at that church’s records. Frank Watters _______________________ Hi Frank Is Patrick Sloan the son of Peter Sloan and Mary Flanagan, born in 1816 in Rostrevor, Co Down, Northern Ireland? It is thought that Mary’s sister Bridget Flanagan was married to Bernard Magee – the 2 couples emigrated together, I believe, so the sponsor to Patrick’s daughter mary, i.e. Bridget Flanagan, isn’t a sister of Mary Flanagan Sloan but could be a niece and Patrick’s first cousin. It is altogether possible that Mary and Bridget had a brother who also emigrated to Ontario. It is my experience (especially in Ireland) that baptismal sponsors were young, so it is possible that Bridget Flanagan was of Patrick’s generation and not that of his mother. Kind regards Deirdre ________________________ Thank you Deirdre for that clarifying explanation. And that Patrick Sloan was indeed the son of Peter Sloan and Mary Flanagan. Frank ________________________ Frank and Deirdre: Did these folks live in North Gower Township? If so, there may be records of them at St. Brigid's RC Church on the River Road in Osgoode Township. Many North Gower Catholics crossed the Rideau River at the Kars Bridge and attended St. Brigid's / St. Bridget's because this church was closer than Kemptville. Other families who may have attended St. Bridgids might be Rice (Raeece), Delaney (Delancy), and Kealey (Kylie), O'Neill (O'Neal), (see www.bytown.net/joneil.htm) and Jarbou (Jarbo - see www.bytown.net/jobrien). ...
