John SLATER and Bridget TORMEY
County Wicklow, Ireland to Bytown, early 1840's

November 1, 2007:

Hi Al,

I don't know if you've heard of this guy, but his death cert is attached, and shows
him to be from Wicklow. His age exactly fits a John Slater on the FW CD, but nothing
else does. So disappointing.

Below is John Slater in 1881. In 1851 he was a carpenter in Aylmer, Que. His wife and
family are listed on the following page, next to Bridget Simpson Whelan from
Ballynultagh, County Wicklow who is on our chart on Bytown or Bust.

John SLATER M Male Irish 70 Ireland Storekeeper Catholic
Bridget SLATER M Female Irish 60 Ireland Catholic

March 1, 2008: Hi Al, After working on the ND records, I'm so grateful to Sue for easy reading of her transcriptions of the early ND marriages! All our old friends are named there, including this marriage for your page on John Slater of Wicklow, with the interesting news that his first wife was a Burns / Byrne: 1842 31 Oct John Slater, widower of Ann Burns, to Bridget Torney?, resident of Bytown, daughter of Denis Torney and Catherine Dormillan? of county Westmeath, Ireland ... New January 12, 2010: Here is a nice example of tracking a person's ancestors using church records from Ireland and from Canada. Anne found this family in the records of Notre Dame Cathedral in Ottawa and also previously in County Wicklow, Ireland. The dates show that this family came to Canada c. 1840. Thanks, Anne! Hi Al, In the Clonmore index, I've now found the Wicklow home of John Slater. Here are the baptismal records for children of John Slater and his first wife, Anne Byrne of Kilquiggin, Co. Wicklow: 1834-04-06 Bapt. of Mary, d/o John Slater and Anne Byrne, Kilquigan 1832-07-08 Bapt. Elizabeth, d/o John Slator and Anne Byrne, Kilquiggan 1836-02-01 Bapt. Bridget, d/o John Slater and Anne Byrne, Kilquiggan 1838-10-18 Bapt. James, s/o John Slater and Anne Byrne, Seskin So it would seem that John Slater maybe arrived c. 1840, as so many of this group did. Anne
