Bernard ROONEY and Sarah Jane McCARTHY

From Joan Rooney:

N.B. Concerning the two Rooney trees of my husband Thomas Rooney
i.e., Bernard Rooney who married Sarah McCarthy and Michael Rooney who married Johanna O'Connell.
I wish to CORRECT the original assumption that Bernard and Michael were half-brothers. This has
now been proven incorrect. From the 1861 census it is now known that the sons of Daniel Rooney
(b.c1788 in Kilkeel, Co. Down) and his wife Rose LARKIN(b c1789 Co. Down) farmng North Gower
in 1851, were 1. William Rooney who married Mary McVee/McVeigh at Chapeau, QC and
 2. John Rooney who married Anne Brennan of South Gloucester(later widowed) and who later moved
to S. Gloucester( his son John married Catherine McMorrow) and 3.Bernard Rooney married to Sarah Jane
McCarthy of Goulbourn who later farmed in Fallowfield. ALSO this now Proves the connection between the
Rooneys of Fallowfield and S. GLoucester. HOWEVER, Michael Rooney of Twin Elm, Nepean married to
Johanna O'Connell was born in Leitrim Co and although he may be some relation to Bernard, John and
William he is NOT a Half Brother and NOT a son of Daniel Rooney of North Gower. His mother may be the
Catherine Rooney who is living with Michael "RONEY" in Twin Elm at age 66 in 1861.

No further info is yet known on the parentage of Michael.

Dear Al, I started to transcribe the Rooney tree for you and then accidentally deleted it all. However, in doing so I discovered that a John Patrick Byrne, b. Oct. 31, 1866 in Nepean married a Margaret Mary Rooney on Jan. 13, 1896, Fallowfied and d. May 4, 1938 in Nepean. Margaret Rooney, b. dec. 10, 1871 in Goulbourn, is the second child of Anthoney Rooney, b Nov. 3, 1843 in Goulbourn who m. Sarah Ann Green of Goulbourn. Anthoney is the son of Michael Rooney who came from Ireland and married Julia O'Connell ln St. Phillips Richmond in 1840 and lived at Twin Elm. Is this one of your Byrnes? Hi Al, Here are more Rooneys. This is the tree of Bernard Rooney, the half-brother of Michael Rooney. The parents of Bernard were Daniel Rooney and Rose ?. Rose was born c.1798 in Ireland and died in 1873. I just want to be sure you understand that the Bernard Rooney tree which you put with John Rooney of Gloucester, mainly belongs in Fallowfield, Nepean where he settled, and that Bernard is the brother of Michael and not yet proven blood-related to the Gloucester Rooneys. This may be what you mean by rearranging your Rooney files, but I just wanted to be sure there was no confusion. Thanks. From Rosemary Benson: Surname: Rooney Brennan Collins Delaney Roark or Roach or Rourke I am looking for descendants of John Rooney and Margaret Brennan. They had 3 children. Joseph John born 1858. Maria Agnes born 1861, Elizabeth born 1862. Maria Agnes and Elizabeth went to Michigan. It seems that Joseph John Rooney stayed in Ottawa. He married Jane Gorman or Gowan in 1880. I have seen her name written both ways. They had 2 children that I have found. Joseph Peter and Joseph John. Joseph Peter Rooney was supposed to have married Mary Elizabeth Ryan in 1908. Thank You Rosemary

John Rooney and Margaret Brennan were married in St Patrick's Parish Quebec The name of the book is Index of Irish Marriages Inventaire des Mariages Irlandsis 1856-1973 John Rooney son of John and Mary Rourke married 10 Aug 1857 Margaret Brennan dau of Joseph Brennan and Mary Delany. witnesses were William Foody and Margaret Foody. They were living in 1851 CENSUS FOR ST LOUIS SUBURB QUEBEC John Timmons Tavern Keeper b Ireland 52 Ann " " 56 John B Quebec 18 Mary Ann " 8 John Rooney B. Ireland 45 widow Julia Sullivan Tulliban ???? " 21 single Hugh Melcu ???? " 62 married John Rooney and Julia and Hugh not members of the family Very hard to read. I'm not sure if this could be my John or not. They were in Nepean in 1858. I did copy all Rooney, Brennan, Delany, Rourke from St Patrick's Parish in Quebec book, but cannot connect any of them up. I did not do Collins or Fitzgerald, as I had no knowledge of them at that time. If anyone would like me to look for a marriage of the above names, I would be glad to do this. There are not too many, but you never know when you will get lucky. Did you say that you had the cemetery records for St Patricks? If you do, I would very much appreciate it if you would look and see if John Rooney and Margaret Brennan are listed there. Thank you again, I really appreciate it. Rosemary Benson
Feb 10, 2001, From Joan Rooney: Hi Rosemary et al, In searching the notre Dame Cathedral (now Basilica), Ottawa marriage records I found a Joseph Rooney married Jane Gowan on July 22 ,1880. The parents of Joseph were John and Marguerite (french spelling) Rooney, and of Jane were Richard Gowan and Marie Ann Sherwood. If they were married there there is a possibility they could be buried in Notre Dame Cemetery on the Montreal Rd. I'll check further. Hope your father is better Rosemary. Joan Rooney
John Rooney widow of Margaret Brennan married Mary Collins, dau of Patrick Collins and Ellen Fitzgerald 8 Sep 1873 in Ottawa. On the marriage record it says that John and Mary Collins were first cousins. Does anyone know of this family? Rosemary Benson
From Leigh: Hi Rosemary: I was surprised to see your query. St. Patrick's is my family parish although I am not catholic, my husband and children are. St. Patrick's is actually in the beautiful small old town of Fallowfield, Ontario (in the greater area of Nepean). If the cemetery was not under masses of snow at the moment I would go there and try to find your stones. In the alternative, I will go the library today and see if the transcription of this cemetery is in the library. I'm not sure but there's a good chance. Where do you live and what other information do you require about these families.......Leigh.
Hello Al: What a coincidence.........I just got back from the library and have the transcripts of St. Patrick's which I will send to Rosemary this evening when I have a few more minutes to type them out. I was going to suggest she get in touch with some of the Rooney's still in the area as there are many................ It's OK with me if you put the correspondence on your site. I am a hobby genealogist living in Ottawa and have gone to the cemeteries in this area more than once to take pictures of stones for people searching but not living in the Ottawa area. ... Leigh
From Rosemary: Hi Leigh. I really appreciate your response. I live in Minnesota, so have no way of checking this out. I did find the death record for Margaret Brennan Rooney in St Patricks Church Records. She died 26 Nov 1872--she was 37 yrs. John Rooney and Margaret Brennan had 3 children John Joseph born 1858 married Jane Gorman or Gowan.Perhaps stayed in Ottawa. Lost track of him. Maria born 1861 Elizabeth born 1862 Maria and Elizabeth both came to Minnesota, by way of Michigan, After Margaret Brennan died, John married Mary Collins 8 Sep 1873 in Ottawa, and they had one son that I know of. He was John born 19 Feb 1874. Too many Johns. I have not been able to find anything on any of these people. Lots of Rooneys and Brennans, but not who I am looking for. Thank you so much for your interest. I really appreciate it. Rosemary Benson

May 4, 2006: Thanks to Leone Rodriguez for the following: John Rooney who married Mary Ann Brennan and was the father to Bernard Rooney and others may have been born in Tipperary. Here is more information and a photo of Anna Rooney, the daughter of John Rooney and Mary Ann Brennan. This Anna Rooney married William Dwyer, the son of John Dwyer and Ann Cullen of Dwyer Hill, Goulbourn. The source of much of this information is the research of Holly Andreozzi Crownover. The picture was received from Jan Friend. Daniel Rooney immigrated to Canada from Ireland. He bought property in North Gower Twp, Carleton Co, Ontario on November 6, 1841. (listed in Abstract Index to Deeds, North Gower (Carleton County, Ontario, Canada): #2209 Daniel Rooney from Canada Land Company, November 6, 1841, 100 acres. According to the Land Records Index the transaction was initiated March 3, 1840.) this notation received from Mrs. Joyce Strang, Archivist's assistant, Government Records, Archives of Ontario, Toronto, Ontario M7A2R9 – in response to a search request from Holly Andreozzi Crownover dated: August 18, 1982. John Rooney, a child of Daniel Rooney, was born in Ireland circa 1820. He most-likely was a brother or half brother to the two other Rooney’s listed on this site: Michael Rooney (born 1811 in Tipperary, Ireland (who married Johanna O'Connell and Bernard Rooney (born 1827 in Tipperary Ireland ) who married Sarah McCarthy. Thus his mother was either named Catherine or Rose, and it can be assumed that John Rooney was born in Tipperary. A possible confirmation of the relationship of this John Rooney to the step brothers Michael and Bernard Rooney is that the last child born to this John Rooney was named Bernard Rooney. John Rooney and Mary Ann Brennan were married March 2, 1840 - St. Philip's R.C. Church, Richmond, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada by Rev. T. Smith. The marriage was witnessed by John Byrnes / Burns, and Bridget Kelly. It appears, according to the record of the marriage of their daughter Anna, listed below, that Mary Ann Brennan died prior to the marriage of Anne on January 14, 1868. John Rooney and Mary Ann (Brennan) Rooney had the following children: 1) Jane Rooney was born in Carleton Co, Ontario, Canada circa 1841. It is believed that Jane Rooney never married and died at 19 years of age from Diptheria. 2) Anne/Anna (Rooney) Dwyer was born December 29, 1842. She married William Dwyer, son of John Dwyer and Ann Cullen, and later moved to the U.S. She died August 10, 1919 and is buried in the Randolph Nebraska, USA, Public Cemetery. 3) John Rooney was born in Richmond, Ontario, Canada November 7, 1844. He was baptized December 11, 1844. Sponsors: James Donnelly / Kennedy, and Teresa / Jessica Fitzgerald. 4) William Rooney was born in Richmond, Ontario, Canada May 28, 1846. He was baptized in Richmond, Ontario, Canada, June 3, 1846, sponsors listed: James B__?, and Mary Cooke." 5) Mary Rooney was born in Richmond, Ontario, Canada April 29, 1848. She was baptized in Richmond, Ontario, Canada, May 20, 1848. Sponsors: Henry McCorby, Mary McCarthy." She married William O’Grady. 6) Bernard (Barney) Rooney was born in Richmond, Ontario, Canada February 18, 1850. He was baptized in Richmond, Ontario, Canada, March 3, 1850. Sponsors: James Brennod / Brennan, and Eliza Brennagh/Brennan” Anna Rooney married William Dwyer in Richmond, Ontario, Canada, January 14, 1868, according to a transcription received from Rev. G. Gahagan, pastor at St. Philip's Church, Richmond, Ontario, Canada to Holly Andreozzi Crownover - letter dated: Feb 19, 1981 from Catholic church records of St. Philip's (Richmond)/St. Clare Mission (Dwyer Hill). "On the 14th of January 1868 after the publication of one ban of marriage a dispensation of two bans been granted by the Bishop of Ottawa, between William Dwyer (son of John Dwyer and Ann Cullen deceased on the one part) and Ann Rooney (daughter of John Rooney and Ann Brennagh deceased on the other part), no impediment having been discovered I the undersigned Priest have received their mutual consent of marriage and have given them the nuptial benediction in the presence of John Ryan and Ann Baxter and others.
