I'm researching the Whelan / Whalen family from Cork Co. Patrick Whelan (b. 1795) and his wife, Bridget Murphy left Ireland about 1830's and settled in March township, Upper Canada (Today known as Kanata,Ontario,Canada). Children included: John Whelan(b.1832), Martin Whelan(b.1826), Mary (b.?), Andrew (b.1842) and Margaret. I am not certain where in Cork Co. they originated, any suggestions on how to obtain such information would be greatly appreciated. March 5, 2002: The Ottawa Citizen dated March 2, 2002 contains a well researched article on the assassination of Darcy McGee in Ottawa in 1868. James Patrick Whalen was (probably wrongly) convicted for this crime and hanged. On March 5, 2002 the Citizen ran another article which mentions how Steven Pusiak is trying to have James Patrick Whalen pardoned posthumously and to have the body exhumed and transferred to Notre Dame Cemetery. Hi Al The information you have sent me on the above mentioned book - (Bruce Elliott's Nepean: The City Beyond)has a couple of items of interest. I have to work today but I'll check details tonight. Page 25 of the Canal Squatters mentions Francois Chartrand, who is very likley the father of Jean Baptiste Chartrand who married Catherine Whelan who fathered Therese Chartrand wife of William Fogarty. William is the son of Andrew Fogarty and Mary Kennedy. I'll check details tonight. Also if you check in the same book under "The Tipperary Catholics of Jockvale", page 31 you'll see a house built by John McGrath built in 1862 on James Tierney land. This is possibly where St Patricks is today because the picture I sent you of the Rectory is the same house?? The author states it was destroyed in 1976? It even has the 2 chimneys. Check it out, it's uncanny.
Note: There were several Patrick Whalens in early Bytown. Lett's Bytown mentions a "Wexford Paddy Whelan".
Here's further information from Frank Watters on Jan 2, 2001
Good evening Taylor and Al; As a coincidence, I just finished doing St Mary's up to the end of 1934 (I still have up to 1942 to do from the microfilms of the Drouin Institute) and I came across Mary Watters, 81 years old, relict of the late John Kennedy, who died on June 11, 1933 with funeral on June 14, 1933, in the presence of Francis & John Kennedy. I don't have that wedding, so I was wondering who Mary's parents were. We have some Mary Watters in the family; none born in 1842, but I have a Mary Watters born in 1852 for whom I don't have a husband. Perhaps the age was wrong at the funeral. However, Elizabeth Tigh, d/o John and Elizabeth Johnston and the sister of William Tighe, was married to William Henry Watters, s/o James and Isabella Kenny, between 1880 and 1885. James was the brother of my gggrandfather, Peter Watters, s/o Patrick and Mary Colligan / MacColgan / Colgan, married to Margaret Whalen d/o Patrick Whalen and Bridget Murphy. Is that the same William Tigh who married Ann Kennedy? As for the Chartrand's, the first generation that I saw on your website for the Chartrand's was François Chartrand. He was married to Olive Damour dit Poitevin / Potvin (Not Aline Alice), d/o Pierre and Françoise Miville from St-Benoit, Qc.where Olive was born. These Potvin's (three sisters of Olive and one brother) married into the ALBERT family. My grandmother, the wife of John Watters, s/o Peter and Margaret Whalen was an Albert. Do you know the parents of François Chartrand? I haven't been able to find that. I noticed some Teevens as well on the death records of Huntley Township (St Michael's Parish, Corkery). Daniel Teevens, s/o Thomas and Sarah Reilly married Mary Elizabeth Watters, d/o Peter and Margaret Whalen. (Thus Mary Elizabeth was a sister to my gggrandfather). I'll sort out what I have and send it to you. I have Family Tree Maker. I can print out a genealogy report in Rich Text File and send it to you if you wish, one for each family. Let me know how many generations you want, although some will not be long. I'm still doing some catch-up on the Watters and closely related Irish families. Up to now I spent a lot of time on the Albert side, to the detriment of the Watters side. Look forward to hearing from you soon Frank Happy New Year Frank and Al Frank, would you be associated from the line of John Kennedy and Mary Watters? John's brother, Thomas had his daughter, Annie, marry William Tighe. My aunt Rita has fond memeories of both Annie and William. She said William was a gentlemans gentleman. Also the line of Chartrands run through the Brazeau line as well. I trust I can speak for both Al and myself, that any information relating to the early settelers would be graciously accepted with a heartfelt thanks. Take care and until next time Taylor Kennedy

December 26, 2001 Hi Al; Compliments of the Season to you, Steve and Taylor and all the others who are contributors or read this web site. I wish you all Happy Holidays, and great year in 2002 including the solution(s) to your genealogy questions. I thought I'd pass on information I recently picked up, including a wedding in Notre Dame Basilica, Ottawa. On 20-04-1847 wedding of Patrick Whelan, son of age of Patrick and Bridget (name illegible) who married Mary Clare, minor daughter of James and Bridget Fagan in the presence of James Corcoran and Margaret Whelan. Both the bride and groom were from March. I 'm of the opinion that Patrick was the son of the subject couple, because of the presence of Margaret as a witness, plus what I have below from the 1871 census in March. In the 1871 census for the Dist. of Carleton, No. 78, Subdist. 1, Twp of March, page 65, Patrick who is identified as Thomas (there may have been an error in given names in the 1847 wedding) is living with his wife Mary, born in Ireland and their five children. Next to them is Robert Denison, and then in succession, Martin Whelan, single with his widowed mother Bridget (Murphy) and then John and Mary (Bennan) and then Peter Watters and wife Margaret (Whelan). Another thing struck me. In Steve's introduction, he mentions that Patrick Whelan and Bridget Murphy left Ireland in th 1830's before settling in March. But in the 1871 census, Thomas stated that he was born in Quebec (c 1819), while Martin (c 1831) and Margaret (c 1826) both said they were born in Ontario. When Margaret who was married to my grgrgrandfather Peter Watters died in 1897, the church register notes that she was 71 years old which confirms her birth date as c 1826. Therefore, it appears that the Whelan family settled first in Quebec around 1820, unless they were just passing through on their way to Ottawa, and arrived in Ontario (March?) about 1826 at the latest. I'll be doing some checking in both Quebec City and Montreal around 1820 and will let you know if I fund something. Finally, because of the time elapsed between the birth dates of the people we have, I'm wondering if there were not other children of Patrick and Bridget that we are not aware of. Best regards Frank
January 23, 2002: Hello: I happened to be looking up names and came across your site. I am from Andrew Whalen and Bridget O'Mally. My grandfather is Andrew Edward Whalen who moved from South March to Kars in 1912, having married Katherine Kirwin. They had 7 children on a dairy farm, my father (#6) is William Austin Whalen. He had 5 daughters, Maureen, Mary, Elaine, Theresa and Madeline Whalen. There are now 12 grandchildren in this last generation. I can send you more information, my mother Annette, is putting together our known Whalen family history. You can reach me at dcleary@recorder.ca. Our five children are the 7th generation on the Cleary dairy farm, est. 1843. Hope I can be of some help. (I named my second daughter Bridget after great-grandmother O'Mally). Thank you, Mary Catherine Whalen

August 28, 2002: Hello Al; The Whalen/Whelan family held a ceremony at the Nicholas Street jail yesterday to consecrate the soil where Patrick James Whelan was laid to rest. Spokesperson for the family, Noble Whalen, then held a night-long vigil in the jail cell where Patrick spent his final night before his wrongful execution. Plans are to include the "re-burial" of Patrick's remains in the Graveyard in Montreal where his wife is buried. Anyone interested in the complete story can view the story in the Ottawa Citizen for 28 August 2002, section A. Take care, Steven Pusiak

November 20, 2007: Hello everyone, Here's the marriage of Patrick Whelan and Catherine McGrath. It was in the Basilica, I believe (details came from Al): 18 Jul 1853 After dispensing with banns, marriage of Patrick Whelan, adult son of Thomas Whelan and Bridget Simpson of Aylmer, LC, to Catherine McGrath, adult daughter of William McGrath and Mary Byrne/Burns of Black Rapids. February 3, 2008: Hello Al et al: I have a new bit to add to the puzzle of the Aylmer Whelans. There was a second Whelan family who received assistance in 1847 from the Fitzwilliam estate to travel from Ballynultagh, Co. Wicklow to Canada, and they were also in Aylmer, QC in 1851: The Fitzwilliam emigration notice lists them in 1847 as follows: James 34, Betty 33, Bess 10, Pat 8, Michael 6, James 2. My new information is this: Margaret McGrath, sister of the Catherine McGrath who m. Patrick Whelan of Aylmer (s/o Thomas Whelan and Bridget Simpson) ALSO married a Whelan of Aylmer: Michael, from the Fitzwilliam notice above: Marriage in ND Lourdes, Cyrville, ON 10 Sept. 1876 Michael Welon, s/o James Welon and Elizabeth Simpson, parish of Aylmer to Marguerite McGraw, d/o William McGraw and Mary Burns Wit: William Lipton and Joseph Levis As the Whelan mother in each of these marriages was a Simpson, it's possible that they were related on both sides. I'd be grateful for any more information on these Whelan families, or on the McGraths / McGraws. ... Anne
