Patrick Sullivan and Catherine Blake
Note: Patrick Sullivan and Catherine Blake may not have emigrated to Canada. Their son, Nicholas O'Sullivan, my Great Great Grandfather came from County Meath to South Gloucester / Osgoode Township in 1842. In 1845, Nicholas Sullivan acquired a wilderness farm property on the Manotick Station Road. Thanks to Mary Quinn for finding this document! The lot acquired by Nicholas O'Sullivan had previously been a Clergy Reserve and had been owned by the Anglican Church. In early Upper Canada (now Ontario) one seventh of all lands were reserved for the Anglican Church and another one seventh were held by the British Crown. After the Rebellion of 1837 here, a movement towards democratic institutions was initiated. These reserves were slowly dismantled, freeing up a lot of wilderness properties in Ontario for new settlers during the 1840's, including those families who were fleeing the Great Irish Famine.
