Pioneer Log Home of Patrick and Catherine NOLAN
Thanks to David Nolan for this family history of Patrick and Catherine NOLAN: Patrick and Catherine Nolan came to Canada in 1862 from the Parish of Templeshanbo, Townland of Bolebeg, Ballindaggan, County Wexford, Ireland. The little village of Ballindaggan is located about six miles north/west of the City of Enniscorthy, County Wexford. In 1993 the village consisted of a post office, a school, three or four houses, two pubs - one of which is the Nolan pub/hotel (no relation) and a Catholic Church - St. Colmans, with an adjoining cemetery. In 1993 there were at least four Nolan families in the immediate area of Ballindaggan. It should be noted that Catherines last name was also Nolan prior to her marriage to Patrick. Upon arriving in Canada they settled on Bogtown Road, (Gloucester Township), now known as Bowesville Road, at Manotick Station. They lived in a log house on the John Redmond Sr. farm, Lot 29, Conc. 3, Rideau Front, Gloucester Township, 200 acres. John Redmond Sr. who was married to Patrick’s sister Mary, moved his family to 125 Nicholas Street, Ottawa.

Two of Patrick’s sisters were already in Canada when he and Catherine arrived - Mary (Mrs.John Redmond) and Bridget (Mrs. Wells). Patrick and Catherine lived on the Redmond farm, Lot 29, Conc, 3, from 1862 to 1875. John Redmond Jr. returned to this farm in 1876 and it remained in the Redmond name until the 1940’s. On May 6, 1875 Patrick purchased 100 acres, the S½ Lot 27, Conc. 3, Rideau Front, Gloucester, from Kennedy Johnston for the sum of $1,300.00. This was the third farm north of the Redmond farm. There were only 10 acres cleared and no buildings. This farm remained in the Nolan name for 100 years. Patricks grandson John sold it in Sept. 1975. Patrick, ( born Nov. 1, 1822, Ballindaggan, Co. On Aug. 1, 1906 at St. Joseph’s Church, Ottawa, Anastasia married Hugh Waters, widower, ( born ______, 1856, died ______, 1926) buried at St. Patrick’s Church Cemetery, Fallowfield, Ont. Son of Patrick Waters and Catherine Spain of Fallowfield. Anastasia had no children of her own. Hugh Waters children - Katie, Hilda, Michael. In 1869 , the Presbytery at Our Lady of the Visitation Church, South Gloucester was destroyed by fire. Approximately twelve years worth of church records were lost, 1857- 1869. The parish priest at the time Father John O’Brien also lost his life in the fire. Therefore, there is no record of Anastasia Nolan`s birth. Note - Anastasia was known as a kind and gentle woman. Anastasia had no children herself but Hugh had children from his first marriage. When Hugh Waters first wife died he hired Anastasia to care for his house and children. After observing Anastasia’s remarkable treatment to both himself and his children over several months, Hugh realized how truly kind she really was and became very fond of her and asked her to be his wife. Hugh’s children found it difficult and awkward to call their step-mother "Mother", choosing instead to call her ‘Mrs. Waters’. This went on for sometime until Katie, the eldest daughter, took her siblings aside and said ’ I don’t think it is right that we call our step-mother ’Mrs. Waters’ , so lets us try calling her Mother instead. The others relented saying they would try, so that night at the supper table Katie turned to her step-mother and said ‘Mother would you please pass me the bread’ and with these words spoken, Anastasia began to cry. She quickly left her chair, spread out her arms and placed them around the children and said that she had been waiting for such a long time for them to call her ‘Mother’ . Points Of Interest - 1 - In 1875 when the farm was purchased by Patrick and Catherine, there were only 10 acres cleared and no buildings. 2 - In 1877 with 12 of the 100 acres cleared the taxes were $6.33. In 1880 they had 20 acres cleared and owned 3 cows, 4 sheep, 2 hogs and 2 horses. In 1891 there was 70 acres cleared. 3 - By 1900 the whole 100 acres had been cleared , drainage ditches put in, three wells dug, a frame kitchen with an upstairs added onto the log house, a summer kitchen, wood shed, machine shed, a log barn, 2 frame hay barns, hen house and pig house had been built. In the early 1900’s a silo had also been added. 4 - On Nov. 9, 1943 the log cattle and horse barn, a frame hay barn, silo and hen house burned down and were not re-built. The cause of the fire was said to be combustion. 5- The existing frame hay barn was built around 1895. 6 - In 1865 Patrick Nolan paid $15.60 property taxes on the 200 acres Lot 29, Conc. 3, Rideau front, Gloucester, where he was living and owned by his brother-in-law John Redmond. 7 - Bogtown Road ( now known as Bowesville Road ) ran from present day Leitrim Road to Mitch Owens Road, near Manotick Station. It was called Bogtown Road because of a flat swampy section between Lots 20 and 25. It got it’s name from a farmer by the name of Gamble who owned a farm at the intersection of Bogtown Road and Bowesville Road, when asked by someone how things were going, he replied `` Boggin`` meaning that the area was boggy and wet and therefore " Bogtown Road ". It was known as Bogtown Road until the early 1950`s. 8 - In the 1800’s the section of Bogtown Road between present day Rideau Road and Mitch Owens Road was known as `Irish Town` because of the John Redmond family, the George Leslie family, and the three Nolan families of Patrick, Willam and Pat having all come from Ireland. 9 - At one time, 1890 - 1910, there were seven Nolan families in Our Lady of the Visitation Church parish - 1) Patrick Nolan - S½ Lot 27, Conc. 3, Gloucester Manotick Station. 2) Bill Nolan - N½ Lot 28, Conc. 3, Gloucester, Manotick Station 3) Pat Nolan - S½ Lot 28, Conc. 3, Gloucester, Manotick Station 4) Moses Nolan - Lot 30, Conc. 3, Gloucester, Manotick Station 5) Michael Nolan - Lot 3, Conc. 3, Osgoode, Manotick Station 6) Bill Nolan - Lot 27, Conc. 4, Gloucester, Johnston Corners 7) Michael Nolan - Gore Lot 12, Gloucester, Bowesville 10 - Pioneer family names that have disappeared from the Manotick Station area - Redmond, Boulger, Kirwan / Kerwin, Leslie, Johnson, Potvin, Harney, Nevins, Burns, Larkin, Meagher, Sullivan, Murphy, Dancy, Hawkins, Tierney, Ralph, Fitzsimmons. 11- The first train into Bytown passed through Manotick Station just after 5 p.m. on Christmas day 1854.
