July 11, 2002:
I hope you don't mind me emailing you, but I noticed your link on the
"Bytown or Bust" site. I have been trying forever to locate my
gggrandparents in the Ottawa area. My gggrandfather was John Murray who
emigrated from Co. Monaghan in 1832 with his wife Jane and their two
children Christopher (age 2 and Harold who died at sea and was 6 mths.)
They were Catholic and I believe they settled in Osgoode Station but I
have not been able to find any trace of them there.
They had 7 more children in Ontario whose names were James, Matthew,
Joseph, Thomas, Mary, Jane and Em.
I don't know whether the names of any of these people are on your list
of Catholic people in the Osgoode area in 1871. If it is not too
presumptuous of me to ask, do you think it would be possible for you to
check for me. I would be most appreciative of any information that you
may be able to provide. I do know that there was another Murray family
(James and Maria) who lived in Osgoode township around that time who had
children with names similar to my ancestors and this has created a lot
of confusion for me). The maiden name of Maria was Harvesten and the
maiden name of my gggrandmother was supposedly Harvesting which adds to
the confusion.
Thanks again for your assistance.
Regards, Mary (ggrandaughter of Christopher Murray)
Hi Mary:

Here are the 1881 Census returns for a Murray family (yours?) in Osgoode
Township. I'll check the 1871 census later for you. I believe that HARVISTON
and HARVISON is also used as a spelling in some of the old church records,
possibly at Notre Dame on Sussex.

Note: There is a history of the family of James Murray and Maria Harvison in the
series "Pioneer Families of Osgoode Township" available from the Osgoode Township
Historical Society. The Murray family arrived in Boston in the mid 1840's.
They married into the following families in the Osgoode area: Loney Styles Wallace Gillissie Ralph
and Cooper among others -- both Catholic and Protestant.
