Dear Al-- Some years ago I spent a lot of time as well researching Osgoode and Nepean, as did my father before me. The Dewans, of course were from Osgoode and the Tierney's, my mothers side were from Nepean. To answer some of your questions-- In Nepean and Fallowfield parish in particular, there were two unrelated Tierney families. Our original Nepean ancestor was Ellen [Waters] Tierney, who as a widow came to Nepean about 1835/38 with her six children. Three of the children moved to the US and the other three stayed in Canada. John stayed and farmed in Nepean--married Bridget NASH from Gloucester. My mother was Olive Tierney d. Timothy [John's son] and Catherine Houlahan. (HOULIHAN also) There was another Tierney family in Gloucester who were also unrelated. Our Tierney's came from Tipperary, but sofar I haven't found the parish from which they came. Maurice Dewan, probably Dwan, Duan or Duane came with his wife Alice Prout, in 1827. The oldest son Patrick was born in Fetherd, Tipperary in 1820. They originally were market gardeners at Hogs Back. Patrick moved to Osgoode in 1840, married a Catherine Johnson / Jonston, who died a few years later and then married Mary Magee, daughter of Bernard Mcgee and Bridget Flanagan. Regading the Burns, I have a copy of the Belden Atlas so am familar with where the Burns farmed. There are also some references to Burns in the Osgoode Newsletters, of which we have many years copies. If you have talked to Michael Daley [a cousin on both sides], I'm sure he has filled you in on what information is available at the museum . Of the family names mentioned in your website we are related to the following: Blanchfield, Daly, Herbert, Kelly, McEvoy, Nash, Power, Shields and Kennedy as well as many more in Nepean. By the way both Maurice Dewan (as DUAN) and Bernard Magee (McGEE) are on the McCabe List Once again thank you for your interest and congratulations on your website, I will stay in touch with it. One other note of interest--I just finished a book on the Titanic and was surprised to see that a James Dewan perished in that disaster. I have no idea who he was. Best regards, David Dewan
DEWAN exerpt from The Kennedy Story in the words of Desmond Kennedy: "Dad was secretary-Treasurer of the Jockvale School, which had 2 rooms, one to grade eight and the other grades 9 & 10. It was Dad's responsibility to hire new teachers and see that they were paid. In the primary school, dealing with eight or more classes in the same room made heavy demands on the teacher. At the same time this arrangement provided a wide range of opportunities for the pupils, ranging all the way from loafing to advancing one's education by listening in on the higher classes. OLIVE TIERNEY (later Mrs. Mike Dewan) was my teacher through middle grades and Gertie (Hanora Gertrude) Gleason in the later grades, including Senior Fourth (The Entrance Class)." "McKenzie King, though a Liberal, never ranked very high in Dad's esteem. Nobody could measure up to Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Mitch Hepburn, as Liberal premier of Ontario, was highly regarded at home mainly because he showed good judgement in selecting as MINISTER of AGRICULTURE, MIKE DEWAN, of Osgoode and later, in Woodstock, a close friend of Uncle Martin Brophy". "By 1942, the network of military forecast offices had grown to a point where an inspection by the headquarters staff was needed, and I was given that assignment. It was arranged that Edna and Paul would stay at her UNCLE BERNARD DEWAN'S farm in Osgoode during the time I would be out west on the inspection trip". ... the above was sent by Taylor Kennedy on Dec. 23, 2000
Hi Al I was looking over the above email that you got. The folks described in the first paragraph are buried at St Patricks, Nepean: John Tierney b.1833 d.Feb. 24, 1904 + Bridget Nash b. 1834 d. May 31, 1912 also F.E. d.Sept. 14, 1889 aged 5 months Ellen [Waters] Tierney b. 1801 d. Oct 23, 1888 Timothy Tierney b. 1857 d. May 02, 1933 + Catherine Houlahan b. 1860 d. Nov. 09, 1940 below them Edna Tierney b. 1903 d. June 09, 1909 Richard Tierney b.1866 d.Dec. 05, 1936 + Catherine Brophy b. 1869 d. Nov. 20, 1919 He would be probably related to Timothy Kennedy mother Anne who farmed in Nepean. If so, her daughter was married to Fitzsimmons and so was John Cunningham daughter married a Fitzsimmons. hmmmmmmmmm
Taylor: My eyes are glazing over looking at all these names. I see many of the same surnames on an 1879 map of Nepean and across the Rideau River at Bowesville, in Gloucester. Bowesville was expropriated to make way for the Ottawa International Airport. It seems some of the Gloucester families crossed the river and attended church at Fallowfield and vice versa. Here are some of the surnames in 1879 in Gloucester, all living within walking distance of each other: GLEESON / GLEASON, O'CONNOR, McCARTHY, KEALY / KEALEY, NOLAN, SHEEHAN (could some of these be SHANE ?), McEVOY, QUINN, CUNNINGHAM, McBRIDE, STRATFORD, NELLIGAN, DAVY / DAVEY, TIGHE, BURNS, LARKIN, BIRT and BRITT, FITZSIMMONS, GILLIGHAN / GILLIGAN, BRADY, WALSH / WELSH, O'MEARA / O'MARA, MURRAY, LENNOX, FINDLAY. Many of these names show up in Osgoode Township (probably next generation). John CUNNINGHAM had a tavern / inn at Bowesville from the 1830's. This may have been a gathering place for the men-folk. By 1855, it was on the railway line going into downtown Ottawa. I'm going to put a picture of Cunningham's Inn on the John Cunningham page.

October 7, 2001: I just came across your site and found some names that were familiar to me. My grandfather John Gaffney was born in West Osgoode, Ontario in 1866. He emigrated with his family to Watertown , NY in 1878. I remember a cousin by the name of Tessie (Teresa) Dewan , who came to visit him occasionally . I think I was told that she worked in the Parliament in Ottawa . I was wondering if Tessie would be in your Family Tree. My grandfather's parents were James & Ellen Blanchfield Gaffney. I recently have started a search on this family . Catherine Loftus Case

There's a link to his Web Site from my main page (below). Today, there's a "Beryl Gaffney Park" just outside Manotick. It's across the road from one of the Warnock farms. ... Al

June 23, 2003: The June 2003 Newsletter of the Osgoode Township Historical Society has a very complete and interesting article about Patrick Michael DEWAN, Minister of Agriculture and his ancestors and descendants.
July 6, 2003: Hello, I caught your web site while surfing the Genealogy web site. My father did a lot of research regarding the Dewan name and I would like to share with you some information he had obtained as well. I've attached a couple of letters, one from a Mary Catherine Dewan and another from P. Michael Dewan. I think you should read the Mary Catherine letter first as it explains the P. Michael letter. The part of the Dewan tree my family descended from seems to originate from Martin Dewan. However, I can't help but think we're somehow related. I've also enclosed some info my father obtained from the Genealogical Office, Dublin Castle. All is in PDF (ADOBE Acrobat) format. My assumptions are this would be the most commonly used format. (Note to users: Most browsers will automatically open the two .pdf files above. If you can't view them, right click on your mouse to download them and view them in Adobe Acrobat ... Al) I hope this information can be of some use/interest to you. I have more notes, etc. if you have any questions. Respectfully, Ed Dewan Colorado Springs CO, USA
