John MANION - Original Pioneer from Ireland to Huntley Township, Ontario, Canada

September 8, 2002:

Hello Al
I was able to enter every single birth on the information you provided. I'm
sending two files, the first GEDCOM the second, the whole thing. In light of
the amount of space and other issues, you may just want to post the GEDCOM
file. Take care for now

June 20, 2011: Hi Ian and Al; I've spent the last few days working on this family and have found many new bits of information which is backed by good sources. There is so much that is wrong re this family that I wanted to at least try to sort out this one branch as it links to my Tierney ancestors. I hope this will clear up any discrepancies that seem to abound and finally put this branch to rest. ... Sue
What appears to be 'fact' re the John and Mary (Huntley Township) Manions
John Manion was married to Mary. Both John and Mary were born in Ireland circa 1794 (source: 1851 census). Mary died sometime between the 1851/2 and the 1861 census. John may have been born circa 1789 if the 1871 census is correct. No proof = no certainty. The 'only' clue as to Mary's maiden name comes from the book "Once upon a country Lane" (published in 1992) where there is a reference to John Jr's grandparents "Sherlock". However, this same book contains a few obvious mistakes and is relatively recent (1992), so still no actual rock-solid proof as to Mary's maiden name. John apparently died when his horse bolted on his way to Almonte in 1872 according to the book. Given the above, this is what I have gleaned re the known children of this couple: 1) Margaret, born abt 1818 in Ireland, never married, and presumably died sometime after the 1881 census and before the 1891 census, presumably in Huntley Township. She is with her widower father in the 1861 census as are her sister Esther and her brother John with John's new wife Bridget (Tierney) and their 2 young children Susan Judith and Lawrence. I can't find her in the 1871 census (perhaps she's off on a trip or was just missed out), but she is back with her brother John and family in the 1881 Huntley census - still unmarried at age 64. 2) Patrick, born abt 1821 in Ireland, married Catherine Lindsay (daughter of Patrick Lindsay and Catherine Quinn) on February 6, 1847 at St. Philip's church in Richmond, Ontario. Witnesses present were Simon McGrath and Patrick's sister Elizabeth. They had 11 children, in order of birth and starting in 1848: Mary Ann; Catherine (married John Lynch Feb 15 1887); John (died before 1861); Patrick Francis (married Elizabeth Marion Tierney, daughter of William Tierney and Bridget Maher) July 25 1883 at St. Patrick's in Fallowfield); Lawrence Edward (married Johannah "Hannah" Devine); Elizabeth; John James (married Mary Jane McKenna 13 Feb 1893 at St. Patrick's in Fallowfield); Joseph Andrew (married Christina Ann Ryan Sep 22 1896); Lucy (died of diptheria, unmarried, July 27 1894. Her tombstone, which is quite new states she died July 26 1893, a full year earlier than what the official Ontario death registration says); Martin (died of dyspepsia, unmarried, on Aug 14 1896); Sarah Ann (married John Ryan on Oct 6 1896 at St. Michael's in Huntley). According to the newer tombstone, Patrick died in 1907. He definitely died sometime between the 1901 and 1911 census, but I am hesitant re the 1907 date without further proof, given the innacuracy of Lucy's innaccurate death date on the tombstone. 3) John, born abt 1830 in Ontario, married Bridget Tierney on Nov 10 1856 at St. Philip's in Richmond. Bridget was a daughter of Denis Tierney and his 2nd wife Judith Quinn. John and Bridget had 7 children starting in 1858: Susan Judith (married James Forrest Nov 25 1879); Lawrence (unfound after the 1881 census); Denis Joseph (married Rebecca Sawyer on June 3 1896 at St. Brigid's in Ottawa); John Andrew (married Mary Ann Meehan, daughter of Patrick Meehan and Jane O'Keefe of Huntley, abt 1890 and they had their first 2 children in Huntley, after which they moved to Montreal and had at least 6 more children. John Andrew died in Montreal on Aug 1, 1929); Catherine Mary (still unmarried by 1901); Elizabeth Anne (still unmarried by 1901); Bridget Mary Teresa (disappears after the 1891 census). 4) Elizabeth, born May 31 1831 in Huntley, married her brother Patrick's brother-in-law John Lindsay on Oct 19 1847 at St. Michael's church in Huntley. Elizabeth died Feb 9, 1921 in Ottawa and had given birth to at least 9 children. 5) Esther, born Aug 5 1836 and died sometime after 1861 6) Bridget, born March 14 1839 and a twin to brother Lawrence, married Denis Michael Egan, a son of Michael Egan and Bridget Murray, on Jan 23 1859 at St. Patrick's in Ottawa. Bridget died in Ottawa on Sep 29 1909 after giving birth to at least 8 children. 7) Lawrence, born March 14, 1839 and a twin to sister Bridget, is presumed to have died sometime between 1861 and 1871. As noted, there is quite a gap between the births of Patrick (circa 1821) and John (circa 1830), so it is reasonable to think there were other children born to this couple in this time period who have yet to be discovered. ...
