Robert S. KEENAN (from County Antrim, Ireland) and Catherine J. BRADIN / BRADEN
born in Bytown (Ottawa), 1830's
moved to Syracuse, New York, USA, c. 1880

August 13, 2008:

Dear Sir:
I would like to add two of my ancestors to your website list. They are Robert S. Keenan
(born 1837 in Ottawa) and Catherine J. Bradin (born 1831 in Ottawa). They married prior to
1873 in Ottawa and moved to Syracuse, NY, USA, between 1877 - 1882. I may be contacted at

Thank you very much.
... William Clark

Mr. Clark:

I was unable to locate Robert and Catherine in the 1881 census for Ottawa. They may have left for
Syracuse before 1881.

Below is the marriage registration for Robert Keenan and Catherine Braden.
(Source: Ontario Marriages from

Catherine was from East Templeton (just across the Ottawa River in Quebec) in the Gatineau Valley.

Robert was a Mechanic. Both sets of parents names are given.

Scroll to the right -- it's the third marriage on the page.

August 14, 2008: Thanks to Sue for the following! The website below shows the entire family in the 1851 Nepean census (ages given were the ages they would be on their 'next' birthday). Note that William and David are twins, which is noted on the original. John's wife (called Nancy in Robert's marriage registration) is called Agnes in this census. John Keenan, Robert's father, died 13 March 1874 in Nepean at age 77. Son Thomas was the informant. Address was Lot 25 concession 2 in Nepean. He was born in county Antrim, Ireland. Listed as Presbyterian. Edith Jane Augusta Keenan, a daughter of Robert and Catherine (Bradin) Keenan, was born in Carleton County 21 May 1873 - birth with the Ontario BMD's. There were 3 more children born in Canada, but they are not in the Ontario BMD, so I suspect they were born across the river in Quebec, which is where Catherine Bradin was born. Robert and Catherine Keenan (wrongly transcribed as Kenyon) are in the 1881 Syracuse, New York census. From the birth of their children enumerated with them, they obviously emigrated to the states between 1877 and 1880. The 1880 Syracuse census is as follows (all surnamed 'Kenyon'): Robert, 48, born Canada Catherine, 39 " Edith, 7 " Florence, 5 " William, 4 " Cora, 3 born Canada Washington, 1 month old (note saying he was born in May 1880), born in New York Jane Bradin. 35, single, nurse, born Canada. (a sister to Catherine?) So, if Cora was born abt 1877 in Canada and Washington was born in May 1880 in New York, they obviously went to the states sometime between those 2 dates. Hope this helps, ... Sue
