Surname: STACKPOLE, SKEFFINGTON

In the 1861 census I find three STACKPOLE families listed in Osgoode Township
(details below). Now my great-great-grandparents, Patrick SKEFFINGTON (1814-1876)
and Nora STACKPOLE (d.1882), also lived in Osgoode Township from 1836 to 1850,
when they left for the USA. I suspect that Nora is the sister of William, "M", and "P" STACKPOLE,
and I believe that the STACKPOLEs were originally from County Cork--at
least I'm fairly certain Nora was born there. Also, there was a John STACKPOLE
listed in the 1851 agricultural census, as was William STACKPOLE. I am seeking
any additional information on this family, particularly Nora STACKPOLE. One other bit:
the 1861 census lists a Mary STACKPOLE, age 86, in the family of William STACKPOLE. I speculate that Mary is
William's mother. Here's the census data (age in parenthesis):
STACKPOLE, William (50), Elin (42), Mary (86), Mikel (17), William (16), Johana (13),
Patrick (11), John (9), ? (6) and Ancia (4).

STACKPOLE, M. (52), Ma. (55), "M" (16-female), "An" (14-female)

STACKPOLE, P (46), "T" (40), "D" (18-male), "B" (14-female), "P" (12-m),
"Ma" (10-f), "M" (10-f), "E" (8-f), "C" (3-f), and "D" (1-m).

July 21, 2001 Hello, I have been trying to have a PLAQUE set beside PHILIP STACPOLE'S SARCOPHAGUS IN THE ANCIENT PERY CHAPEL, ST. MARY'S CATHEDRAL, LIMERICK, IRELAND. (abt.1090 A.D.) I HAVE BEEN INFORMED THAT THE PLAQUE WAS APPROVED AND IS IN IT'S PLACE. (I'm so pleased.) THE PLAQUE EXPLAINS HOW JAMES STACKPOLE AND HIS EIGHT CHILDREN WERE DISPLACED AND PROPERTIES TAKEN BECAUSE OF THEIR ARGUMENTS AGAINST THE KING. (abt1550 AD) OUR NEW ENGLAND IMMIGRANT WAS ONE OF PHILIPS CHILDREN DISPLACED FROM HIS FATHER, in Limerick, Ireland. PHILIP STACPOLE (NAME CHANGED TO STACKPOLE IN THE NEW WORLD) JAMES STACKPOLE THE NEW ENGLAND IMMIGRANT WAS FORCED & TAKEN TO AMERICA BY THE ENGLISH TO THE COLONIES abt.1658 (14yrs.old). I have a wonderful feeling today knowing that our Stackpole grandfathers are together through this plaque. at last in the Pery Chapel after over 350 years!!!!! With good fortune to the family's who have one ounce of the STACKPOLE BLOOD, I humbly donate this PLAQUE for it's historical value and the world to view, with the HELP OF GOD forever. sincerely, Lester Stackpole

I have only a name. Mary Shanahan was born 1852, in Ontario Canada. These Shanahans and Stackpoles are buried here at Our Lady of Visitation in South Gloucester. I'll try and add some more information later today. There is a large Stackpole tombstone in the cemetery. I'll try and get a picture of it this week. ... Al

Stackpole, and Pierce (otherwise Andrew) Moore, three felonious Levellers or White Boys, attended by a Popish clergyman, were taken in horse chairs from the county gaol [sic], to have sentence of death executed on them ; the former as on this day at Mitchelstown ; Stackpole at Glanworth, and Moore at Fermoy, on Saturday next." ============== The above quote I gave was all they had on Stackpole. You can find the complete story at Newspaper Abstracts. I am descended from James Stackpole. The one who was dragged here kicking and screaming from Ireland. lol Lora Stackpole -------------- Hi Al, Posting my email is fine with me. Actually all Stackpole's are related in one way or another. We are originally descended from Elidyr in Stackpole Wales. From the Stackpole historical page... "Elidyr's heir, Robert, granted two small peasant holdings or bovates to the Commandery of the Knights Hospitallers at Slebech, and the church of "Trefduant" - possibly St. Edrin's to St. David's cathedral. It is known that he had a number of brothers, one of whom, Philip, carved out an estate in Ireland and founded the Stackpole family of County Clare." That is how the family came to be in Ireland. July 9, 2002: From: "Joy Eastop" To: Subject: STACKPOLE Family Name Date: Monday, July 08, 2002 7:24 PM Hi Al, I just happened to come across your " Bytown or Bust " website, and was quite impressed at what you had done there. I was also excited because my mother is a Stackpole, descended from John Stackpole and Julia Connors. We have a lot of information available, how would you like it submitted? We could email it to you for your perusal, and hopeful it will make it to your website for all to view. By the way, Bertha E. Hogan (you have her listed as daughter of John Hogan and Ellen Brooks under HOGAN), was "fostered" by the Hogans. She was actually born Bertha Ellen Christopher! Looking forward to hearing from you, Joy Eastop ================== Hi Joy: Great to hear from you! I'd really like to receive anything you have on the Stackpoles -- they seem to have had a lot of close ties to both my Burns and Christopher ancestors. You and I may be related. I'll be glad to share what I have also. If you have anything in WordPerfect, MS-Word or plain text format, I should be able to read it, if you send it as an e-mail attachment. Or if you use a family tree program program, I may be able to read it also. Failing that, you could cut and paste from your document into the body of an e-mail to me. This is great, to make contact with someone this close to my own family. Thanks for writing! ... Al

November 7, 2003: I'm new to genealogy. Looking for any information on William Stackpole who may have come to Canada form Ireland in 1861. Two of his sons were Michael Stackpole [1846-1925] & lived in Ottawa, Canada Patrick James Stackpole [b?- 1926] buried in Texas, USA Any help will be greatly appreciated! Stacey
May 1, 2008: Hello Al My name is Steven Stackpole. I grew up in and around the Greely area, on the family farm on Hwy 31. As a young boy I can remember buying and picking up hay from the Michael Daley farm with my Grandfather. My Grandfathers name was Michael Stackpole, his wife’s name Evelyn. I’ve long toyed with the idea of starting out on a genealogical study of my family heritage, but having some idea of the work ahead, hesitated. My Grandfather passed away a few years ago and my Grandmother passed away this winter. I’ve decided to take up the challenge, of researching the family origins in the hopes of filling in some holes and perhaps piecing together some stories. So far your website Bytown or Bust has been quite helpful. I would like to offer my services, if I come across anything that you may be interested in, I will pass it on to you. I ask as well if you have any information or advice that you might in fact pass it on to me. Thank you ... Steven Stackpole
May 2, 2008: Thanks to Sue for the following detective work: Hi Steven - If your grandmother was Evelyn Pearl Wallace, then this is your family - ALL are accurate dates unless otherwise noted - dates taken from the church registers (Drouin Collection) Starting with what we know for sure: William Stackpole, born abt 1812 and married to Ellen Britt, born abt 1819 and died before 1881. Found in Osgoode, Russell county, Ont. One of their children was: Michael Stackpole, born 18 Feb 1844 and baptized 3 March 1844 at Notre Dame in Ottawa. He died 22 August 1922 and his burial service was held at the church in South Gloucester. Michael married in South Gloucester on (looks like 7th or 10th) of February, 1880, Mary Shanahan, a daughter of Thomas Shanahan and Ann Joint (Joyce) who were both born in Ireland. Mary Shanahan was born 1 November 1851 and died 19 Nov 1910 - birth and death registered in the South Gloucester church registers. One of their sons was William John (Willie) Stackpole, who was born 27 August and married 9 Nov 1915 in South Gloucester Mary Agnes Cahill, a daughter of Patrick Cahill (c.1858-1930) and Esther Fanning / Fenning (c. 1858 - 1931). Mary Agnes Cahill was born 21 Jan 1895 (this date taken from the 1901 census where she was transcribed as Mary Ann, but it clearly is Agnes, not Ann). Patrick Cahill was born in Osgoode and was a son of John Cahill and Mary McMara, both of Ireland. Esther (Essie) Fanning was born in Metcalfe, a daughter of Patrick Fanning and Ann Kilfoyle, also both of Ireland. One of their children was your grandfather Michael George Patrick Stackpole who was born 26 Sep 1916 (baptized 30 Sep 1916 at South Gloucester). He married your grandmother, Evelyn Pearl Wallace at South Gloucester. Needless to say, if Evelyn Pearl Wallace is not your grandmother, then this is someone else's family! Hope this helps your start on your genalogical quest, ... Sue
June 10, 2008: Hi Al: I am researching the Thomas & Ann Joyce Shanahan family and note their daughter, Mary Shanahan married Michael Stackpole (date unknown) had a son, William John. William married Mary Agnes Cahill and had three children: 1. Michael George Patrick b. 9/26/1916 and 2. Mary Ann b. 4/3/1922. Following are the questions on the Stackpole's: The marriage date of Mary Shanahan & Michael Stackpole; the name, birth/marriage/death dates of William & Mary Stackpole's third child; the names b/m/d of Michael George Patrick and Evelyn Wallace; if Mary Ellen "Nellie" Stackpole b. 7/4/1884-d. 12/31/1958 was ever married, to whom and date; Also I have been trying to locate the grave of my husbands great-grandfather Paul Shanahan b. 6/29/1853, d. 12/22/1914 (son of Thomas & Ann Shanahan). GG Paul married Jane Fitzsimmons, b. abt. 1851, d. abt 1886 on 10/28/1875. Jane died in Ontario and GG Paul died in Ogdensburg, USA, NY City Hospital and his remains were supposedly buried in either South Gloucester or Osgoode Township by/with his wife. (Paul's wife is buried at St. John the Evangelist at Enniskerry, Osgoode Township). I know this is a tall order, but any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Carol Shannon (Carol's query has also been posted to the Shanahan page (link above))
