January 27, 2014: In 1955, A.Y. Jackson, one of the first members of Canada's Group of Seven artists retired from his studio in Toronto to the picturesque village of Manotick, now part of the City of Ottawa, after a lifetime of landscape painting all over Canada. Most of his early work was executed on canoe trips in Algonquin Park. Tom Thomson was an early colleague.

In 1958, he wrote his autobiography in Manotick, Ontario. The book is called A Painter's Country, The Autobiography of A. Y. Jackson, published by Clarke Irwin Canada, Toronto, 204 pages, no ISBN. Here is a brief excerpt from pages 188 and 189:
