The Houlahan and Hawley families came to Canada in 1840 from Ballycapple, County Tipperary, because of a serious famine in Ireland. The Hawley family settled on land in Nepean Township, Carleton County on what is presently known as Viewbank Road. After you've finished with the Hawley's on this page, check out more Hawley's on this web site. The Houlahan family also settled in Nepean Township, on what is now known as Cedarview Road. Tom Houlahan cleared land and built a home for himself. Some of his family were: William, George, Tom, Michael, Janie, and Elizabeth. Tom Sr.'s sister was Ann, she married Edward Hawley. Their family consisted of: Edward, Roderick, Michael George, James, Jane Ann, Kate, Norah, Mary, and Nellie. Thanks, Al My cousin and I have decided to pick up the leads on our mothers' side (Houlahan) as he and I and another Chandler cousin have been already working out the Chandler lineage and have a pretty good start. I remember relatives taking a distinct pride in the spelling of Houlahan with the "a" as opposed to the "i", but thanks for the insight. Thanks for passing the info along, if I receive any data I'll let you know. Pass along to me any inquiries as I might have the missing link somewhere in all the tidbits we have put together so far (we have quite a bit of anecdotes, names, facts etc - it's the putting them all in relation to each other that takes the effort!)Thanks again, Jim Chandler
From Taylor Kennedy on April 7, 2000: Hello Jim and Al Sorry for the delay in response, just a couple of things that needed attention. As for the Tierneys, I'll have to pull my books for them. But the last time I was at the Ontario Archives, I copied James Watt last Will and Testament. He made it out June 29, 1882. James was the brother to Cornelius. Cornelius took over the farm on Lot 14, concession 2 when James died in February of 1892. He died in Ludington, Michigan,USA.(as stated in the will). James left his mother Ann Watt all the household goods. David Clothier and John Costello were witnesses to the writing of the Will. Now Lawrence Kennedy, son of my gggreat grandfather William Kennedy and Isabella Watt, married Bridget Costello, daughter of John Costello and Ann Hogan. The witnesses to the marriage dated April 28, 1875, were Bridget Kennedy (Lawrence's sister) and Andrew Watt. Where Andrew fits in at this time is unknown, but rumour had it that Isabella came to Canada with a brother James Watt. I still have to check the 1842 agricultural and personal census. Another interesting point, that Al sent me was the births in Huntley from 1837. James Kennedy (eldest son of William Kennedy and Isabella Watt) was baptized there and the godparents were James Kennedy and Elizabeth Watt. (Sister to Isabella? Was James Kennedy brother or father to William Kennedy?) Still a lot of digging ahead. You have also mentioned Hawleys in your email to Al. Judith Kennedy (first child to William and Isabella) married Roderick Hawley who I would safely assume the son of Roderick Hawley Sr. of Manotick. Also the second generation, Lillian Kennedy, grand daughter of William and Isabella, married Michael Hawley. Still research for paperwork required here. I'll find my book and pull out the Tierneys. Maybe a link in relationships or maybe not. Well that's all for now. I'll catch up over the weekend and send you some more information. Take care Taylor ------------- Hello Al & Jim (Also on April 7, 2001) I just read the information on Bytown or Bust. Here's some detail to the Kennedys and Hawleys. Judy Kennedy b. March 10, 1836 married Roderick Hawley February 08, 1869 at St. Patricks Church in Fallowfield. Lillian Kennedy b. circa 1886 - 1890 married Michael Hawley November 27, 1929 at St. Brigids Church in Ottawa. These kids were about 55-60 years old when they married according to my Aunt Rita. They had a farm in Manotick that my aunt Rita and uncle Bill used to visit. Off to work. Taylor ------------- Also from Taylor: Notre Dame Cathedral Parish register ; 1836 -07 -10 ; baptisim of Judah [ sic ] 4 months old, lawful child of William Kennedy and Isabella Watt. Sponsors James Kennedy and Elizabeth Watt. ( index calculates her date of birth as March 10, 1836 and gives her the name as Judy ) In the 1851 Nepean Township census, enumeration district 2, pg 53, she is listed as July and her age next birthday is listed as 15. In the 1861 Nepean Township census, enumeration district 1, pg 3, she is listed as Judy age 25. May be the [ JULIA KENNEDY ] wife of Patrick Hawley who died on April 01, 1898 as per the following entry in The Fallowfield Parish register ; 1898 -04 -03 burial of Julia Kennedy, wife of Patrick Hawley of Ottawa, who died on April 01, 1898, age 65 years.Witnesses Andrew Fogarty and Thomas T.J. Sloan. Christening Godparents ; James Kennedy & Elizabeth Watt. First Confirmation in the Roman Catholic Mission of Nepean, September 21, 1852, Judy was 15 years old. From Taylor Kennedy on April 7, 2001: Hi Jim and Al Jim, please see the following. Would you know who J.P. Houlahan is? In the last paragraph. Taylor AN EXERT FROM THE KENNEDY STORY by Desmond Kennedy ; Through the years, a trunk that Mary Fermoyle had brought from Ireland in 1862, was kept in the upstairs hall of the Brophy home, and was used as a receptacle for money and important family papers. The key to the trunk hung on a nail over the door, where anyone needing money could get it, no questions asked! ANOTHER EXERT FROM THE KENNEDY STORY by Desmond Kennedy ; Grandmother Brophy ( Mary Fermoyle ) had come from Ireland in 1862 at the age of 19, marrying Michael Brophy shortly after she arrived in Canada. A half-sister of hers, Judy was married earlier to Paddy Brophy, a brother of Michael. Another Brophy , Joseph married Bridget Madden ( Ellen Brophy's aunt Biddy ) a sister of Patrick Madden. Mrs. Jeremiah Berrigan ( Julia ) was the daughter of Paddy Brophy and Judy Fermoyle. For many years, the Berrigans ( Mrs. Berrigan was a first cousin of Ellen Brophy, Desmond's mother ) used to visit our place regularly. I can remember how proud Mr. Berrigan was of their Essex car - this was a few years before we got our first car. To hear him tell it, the Essex was the best car made up to that time. Children of Joseph Brophy and Bridget Madden were: Annie who did not marry, Maggie Jane ( Mrs. J.P. Houlahan ) , Julia ( Mrs. Tom McKenna ) , Mary ( Mrs. Charlie McKenna ) , Patrick who married Cassie McDonald, Joseph who married Agnes Tierney and Ambrose who married Louise Daley. ... Taylor
From Jim to Taylor on April 10, 2001: Taylor: Not sur about SSN's, they came in in the 30's after Roosevelt's first election 1933 - I'll have to look into it. I'd be glad to look up on my end what I could - need more info on your uncle. Not sure of Clement MI, but there is a Mt Clemens here in the Detroit area. I have some Tierney and Watt info as I called my mom last night because it was bothering me where the Tierney's fit into our lineage. My mom is Irene Houlahan, her mother was Mary Watt - Mary Watt had 8 other brothers and sisters - Andrew, William, Arthur, Tom, John, Emma, Lena, Cornelius. Her father was Cornelius Watt who married Margaret Tierney. According to mom, her Grandfather Watt was estranged from his family when he married Margaret Tierney and converted to Catholicism. Mom thinks some of the Watt's moved to the States, but not sure as her grandfather was not in touch with the family much. In your emails you mention Cornelius Watt as being a brother to James, that James died in Ludinfton, MI leaving farm to Cornelius. Not sure if same Cornelius, but the name isn't that common in the old records, is it? My mom's uncle, Cornelius Watt, lived in Detroit, I met him before he died in 1968. Margaret Tierney had a brother Richard and a sister Ellen, who married a Patrick Madden. There was also a Tierney branch who ended up in Detroit, an Al and a Roy, not sure of the connection, but Roy's son Gary Tierney became the pastor of Guardian Angel's church in Clawson MI and was my parish priest for a number of years. My mom and he met and went over the Tierney-Houlahan connection, he was something like her 2nd cousin. My mom is going to look more into her info to try and tie Al and Roy Tierney in with Margaret's side. Brophy info: My mom's Uncle, Irwin Houlahan, married Mabel Brophy, her brothers were the Wilbert and Emery mentioned in your email as coming to the States. There are quite a few familiar names here and some connections. Here is another one: My Mom's father was Edward James Houlahan (1890-1953), his father was James Houlahan married to Jane Ann Hawley. Jane Ann's brother Michael George was married to Lillian Kennedy - the kid's" you mention as being married 11-27-1929 and living in Fallowfield. So, my mom's great Aunt by marraige was your Lillian Kennedy, not sure what Lillian was to you? My Mom is working on trying to get the birthdates and deathdates of Watt's, Tierney's, etc. Hope this provides a few connections and enlightens us a little. Take care and I will post more when I know. Jim

From Taylor Kennedy, April 2001 Here's the last will of James Watt. From reading it we find that James, Cornelius and Sarah are children of Ann Watt. We also see John Costello as a witness. Would this be Ann Houlahans husband or Sarah's??? Also note that David Clothier is a witness, who was the Postmaster of Nepean and Andrew Watt drove the stage coach with mail to and from Ottawa. June 6, 2001 Hello Taylor and Al: I was up to Ottawa for my cousin's wedding over our Memorial Day weekend and my cousin Mike and I went out on that day to Jockvale area as he knew that our Great grandfather Watt's house and blacksmith shed were still standing. Sure enough, right on the corner of the intersection of Greenbank and Jockvale Rd (I'm pretty sure that I have the two names right but I would need a map of the area to be sure) - it is a white house with some outbuildings - That was Cornelius Watt's house where our grandmother Mary Watt grew up. Mike took some digital pictures, as soon as I get one I'll send it along. The place is abandoned now, my great uncle Andrew Watt lived there after Cornelius died in 1932, he died in 1938 - we don't know who the property belongs to now, but just north across Jockvale Rd there is a new mall/store kind of thing, so I guess it won't be long before it is a moot point! There is a driving range right behind it if that is any help. We also went up to the old public school (built 1907) where my grandfather Edward Houlahan and grandma Watt attended - I suppose they met there too! We also stopped in the St Patrick's Fallowfield cemetary and saw the Watt graves, some Kennedy's, Bergin's, Houlahan's too! Next time I'm up there (July) I'll try and get back to the cemetary with my cousin and get some digital shots of the tombstones. Take care for now! Jim Chandler
