February 8, 2010: Thanks to Taylor for the following: Ottawa Citizen – September 1, 1953 ANDREW FORREST WIDELY MOURNED ALMONTE – One of the oldest residents of Huntley Township, Andrew Forrest, age 92 years, died recently. He was the last member of the family of the late Cornelius Forrest and his wife, Ellen Connolly. In 1896 he married the former Margaret Carberry, at Lanark, who preceded him years ago. To this union were born seven children, six whom survive. One died in infancy. Left to mourn his loss are two daughters and four sons; Mrs. Samuel Moran (Loretta of South March); Mrs. Dominic Kennedy (Marcella) of Appleton; Albert of Lanark; Lawrence and Emmett of Ottawa and James at home. Seventeen grandchildren also survive. The late Mr. Forrest was a devout parishioner of St. Michaels Church, Corkery, a member of the Holy Name Society. The funeral which was largely attended was held from the late home to St. Michaels Church. Rev’d Father Maurice Egan of Almonte celebrated the requiem mass and said the graveside prayers, at St. Michaels Cemetery.
June 17, 2010: Mr. Gordon Forrest has a new e-mail address. He can be reached at forrestg@sasktel.net (incorporated in the list below).
October 31, 2010: Good morning - Would anyone know where James Forrest (b. abt 1804) and wife Bridget Kennedy (b. abt 1816) are buried? Or for that matter, when were they married and when they died. They may have, at one time, lived in Turtle River tsp of Grand Forks Co, North Dakota. James bought land there in 1883 (when he was 79??)? Thanks Gordon ______________________________________________ As usual, Thanks to Taylor Kennedy for the following very thorough research. He has taken a continent-wide collection of records and woven them into a wonderful story of the migrations of the Forrest family. ... Al From Taylor: To: Gordon & Al From the 1851 census for Huntley, James Forrest and Bridget Kennedy had 8 children and they are found in the 1861 census living next door to the Brown family. John Brown and Sophia’s daughter Melissa married Richard Forrest April 4, 1866. She was Church of England and born in New York, USA. In the 1871 census there is no sign of Bridget Kennedy or James Forrest. I suspect they died prior to that date and are buried in Huntley, but no tombstones, as in the case for the Carroll families. The vital stats start in 1871 and the church records begin in 1872, so there is no death record in writing. Richard and Melissa had three children before departing for Bellevue, North Dakota in 1878. In the 1900 census they are found living in Turtle River, North Dakota next door to their son John and wife Rose with their children. Between this time and 1911 there were several border crossings into North Portal, Saskatchewan. In 1906 Richard, Melissa with son Michael, grandson William and granddaughter Helen are living in Qu’Appelle, sub district 37, Saskatchewan. In 1910 the family is back in Baden Township, North Dakota. Eventually the family moved to Grenfell, Saskatchewan. Richard and Melissa’s son James Forrest enlisted to fight in WWI. His next to kin was his mother Melissa Forrest in Grenfell, Sask. His regimental # 693313 and he was with the 174th Cameron Highlanders. States his birth was in Carleton County, Canada on April 11, 1876 and this was confirmed by the church record for Almonte. James Forrest, son of Richard Forrest and Amelia Brown was baptized July 26, 1876 and was born on April 11th, 1876. The godparents were John Slattery and Ellen Forrest. He stood 5’ 9”, dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair. The is no record of his demise during the war, so he can be claimed as a returned soldier from the war. This migration pattern to North Dakota then to Saskatchewan was a common one, not only for this Forrest clan but for the Kennedy clan also from Huntley. Take care ... Taylor Kennedy _________________________________________ Thanks to all for the effort put into this quest. I have come across an interesting article from a North Dakota book Source: Compendium of History and Biography of North Dakota - Containing a History of North Dakota Illustrated: Chicago: GEO A. OGLE & Co. Publishers, engravers and bood manufactures 1900 Page 924 RICHARD FORREST. As an all around prominent man and pioneer settler of Turtle River township, there is no one of its citizens who more justly deserves special mention than the subject of this review. Mr. Forrest has labored for the inter- ests of his community as well as his personal in- terests and has been rewarded by witnessing a most remarkable growth in the region in which he has spent so many years, as well as accumulating a good property and gaining a favorable name. Our subject is a native of Jefferson county. New York,(incorrect - his wife Melissa was from New York) and was born February 22, 1838. His parents, James and Bridget (Kennedy) Forrest, were natives of Ireland and emigrated to Canada, the father in 1820 (I think he came on the Hebe in 1823) and the mother in 1823. They reared thirteen children, of whom five sons and two daughters are now living and all are residents of the United States, with the exception of one daugh- ter. (This is the interesting part relevant to my search)The parents and our subject went to North Dakota in 1877 and the parents died there. The father entered land in Turtle River township, Grand Forks county, and engaged in farming there until his death. Mr. Forrest was reared in Canada and received his education there, and after completing the same worked in the lumber woods. He went to Califor- nia in 1857 and spent three years and in 1877 went to Grand Forks. North Dakota. Heat once entered claim to land as a pre-emption in Turtle River township, and has held continuous residence thereon. He now owns and operates three hundred and sixty acres of choice land, all of which is well cultivated and is improved to furnish a comfortable home, and care- fully garnered to dispose of the crops. Our subject was married, Aoril 5, 1866, to Me- lissa Brown, a native of New York. Mr. and Mrs. Forrest are the parents of five children, who are named as follows : John. James. Mary A., Emaline and Michael F. The family are members of the Catholic church and are highly esteemed by all in their community. Mr. Forrest has served in all the township offices and is the present chairman of the township board. He served on the school board fourteen years and is active in educational matters. He enjoys well-merited success as a result of his labors in North Dakota. This book is online at http://www.archive.org/stream/compendiumhistor00chic#page/n5/mode/2up ... I am hoping one of you can help me trace them back to Cork and perhaps tell me what life was like coming to Huntley from Ireland. Any information will be very helpful! ...
