August 31, 2013:
The village of Douglas in Renfrew County is one of the centres for Irish heritage in the Ottawa Valley.
The village is closed to traffic during the annual celebration of St. Patrick's Day.
Douglas is located on today's Highway 60, west of the Town of Renfrew.
(see map on our Renfrew County page). This part of Renfrew County was surveyed into farm lots
to receive settlers from Ireland. The area boomed starting with the timber industry, especially
after John Egan founded nearby Eganville.
Zion United Church was previously known as Zion Presbyterian Church.
Father Michael Byrne, one of the first graduates from the University of Ottawa, is buried in Douglas.
