From The Manotick Station Story (available from the Osgoode Museum):
"Michael Redmond was born in Tipperary in 1833, came to Canada in 1850 and
settled in North Gower. In 1860 he married Ann Wilson who was born near
Manotick Station. They had six children: William, Robert, Thomas, John, Marguerite
and Michael.
John, Thomas and Michael went to Eganville and settled there, where they
worked for the railroad."

Mr. La France:

Thanks for your very interesting e-mail regarding the
Bolger/Kealey/Bergin/Redmond/O'Brien families.

I'll try to answer your general questions, as well as I can, first and will
send you another e-mail later in the week dealing with specific families.

I began researching my ancestors about four years ago and I believe my
family history is similar to most Irish families in this area.

The only information I had to begin with was the site of my Grandparents'
graves - St. John's at Enniskerry in Osgoode Township. It was like pulling
teeth to get information from anywhere until I met Michael Daley who is a
wealth of information. He steered me to a cemetery listing for St. John's
which I got from the Osgoode Township Museum. I was also able then to get
cemetery listings for St. Mary's at South Gloucester (now called Our Lady of
the Visitation) and for St. Patrick's at Fallowfield from the Nepean Museum.
The St. Mary's cemetery listing had my Great-Grandparents (the tombstones
were recorded sometime around 1980), but not my Great-Great Grandparents
(there was no tombstone). However they were listed in the LDS records for
St. Mary's.

About this time, I came across the McCabe List which has the names of many
of our ancestors. It is an 1829 listing of people who were in or near
Bytown, mostly working on the canal. Bruce Elliott has written a book.

The same names kept cropping up - the names in Enniskerry and Fallowfield in
the 1880's were the same as the names at St. Mary's in the 1850's and on the
McCabe List in 1829. Same names, different generations.

The question then became "What church did they all attend in the 1830's?".
The answer is Notre Dame in Bytown. The LDS records go back to about 1827
for this church. The same names appear again and again. Some of the families
are listed as living in Nepean or at Black Rapids in the 1830's. There
probably was a mission at Jockvale because many of the original families
lived there - I'd like to know for sure.
You will probably find some of your ancestors listed at Notre Dame.

I believe that in the 1830's, Notre Dame at Bytown sent out missionary
priests to areas like Fallowfield, Jockvale and South Gloucester before the
churches were built there. Services were held in rudimentary chapels or in
private homes and events were recorded in the records for Notre Dame.
Another very early church is St. Phillips at Richmond (from 1818) where
there are probably a lot of the usual names. Also, many of the early
families seem to have been in the Hull/Wrightville/Aylmer area in Quebec at
different times.

Here are a couple of questions for you:

1. I've often come across the surnames BERGIN and BERRIGAN. Do you know if
these are the same family, but with different spelling?

2. I remember seeing something previously on James KEALEY and Helen BYERS.
I had never come across the name "BYERS" before and wondered at the time if
it could have been "BYRNES".

Well, thanks again for your e-mail. I'll get back to you with what I have on
specific families and some other sources, later in the week. My "filing
system" is not the best.

You probably have more info than I do on many of the families. If you like,
I could set up a separate web page for you at "Bytown or Bust" and include
your e-mail address on it. You never know where new information is going to
turn up.

Thanks for the quick reply. At St. Pat's in Fallowfield, my ancestors were sometimes listed as Bergin and sometimes listed as Berrigan therefore this is one-in-the-same, in certain cases, although Bergin is the correct name. Can you please provide more information on the McCabe list to which refer? I am not familiar with this list. Regarding Helen Byers, an elderly cousin of my mothers mentioned the name Byers to me. I then subsequently found a baptism record for St. John's (or could have been St. Brigids - I do not have it handy right now) that listed a birth to James Kealey and Helen Byers. I am assuming this was the sister of my great grandmother, Mary Kealey, although I cannot seem to find anything on Mary. I will check the registers for Notre DAme at LDS to see if they have anything. I will send you a gedcom or a report of the information I have to see if it is of any interest or value to you. Is Michael Daley generally approachable to provide advise or info? Thanks.
First, thanks for the offer of the GEDCOM file. It sounds really helpful. Next, Michael Daley is very approachable. He's away on a trip to Alaska now, but you can reach him by e-mail through the Osgoode Township Historical Society and Museum (there's a link on my web page). I have added a page for Michael Berrigan and Catherine Kelly. I wasn't sure if Berrigan and Bergin were the same. My daughter lives at Jockvale and many of the streets and parks are named for Irish settlers. There's a Berrigan Street near her house. Here's Michael Berrigan's page. There's a link from "Bytown or Bust" to it. The McCabe List was discovered in the 1980's in the archives in London, England. It is a petition among people, mostly Irish, who were in Bytown in 1829. It was directed to Colonel By who was in charge of building the Rideau Canal. It has about 700 signatures and the interesting thing is that it gives the parish and townland in Ireland for the signors. For example, Joseph Quinlan ML# 350 signed it and gave his origin as County Tipperary, Parish of Bourna, near Roscrea. Joseph was married to Maggie Bergin. His two brothers-in-law were Dennis and John Bergin. Joseph later lived in Nepean and his descendants married into some of my family in Osgoode Township. I also have a Berrigan (forget which one) living with my GGGrandparents in the 1861 census for Osgoode Township. There's a link to the McCabe List, including the ISBN number on "Bytown or Bust". It costs about $20.00 Canadian from Global Genealogy Supply. It's written by Bruce Elliott.
Your comment about a Berrigan living with your GGGrandparents is interesting. The story for my great-grandfather is that he came from Ireland approx. 1843 at the age of 3. His parents both died on the boat therefore he was orphaned and living with someone in the area. He married Mary Kealey around 1876. They lived near the Rideau, down from Jockvale. His name is listed on one of the maps attached to your web site that shows all the landowners. I wonder if "my" Dennis Bergin is possibly the individual living with your GGGrandparents. Thanks again and any info. you can pass along that might be helpful would be appreciated. I will also write to Michael Daley. When I get a chance, I will send you the Gedcom for whatever I already have. Mitchell
Attached is a Gedcom for my mother's family. Even though most of my aunts and uncles are now deceased, I have removed dates for all just in case there are sensitivities. My father's family is french-Canadian and it has been quite a bit easier to find his information than my mothers.... but I continue to try. If you can provide any additional information on the family names I had previously listed this would be very helpful. I will also write to Michael Daley.

In 1879 there were two farms belonging to William and James Kealey at Black Rapids, both sides of the road (now Highway 16) and both fronting on the river. There was also a farm belonging to Dennis Bergin at Jockvale. Not sure if this is your Dennis Bergin or not. Are you in the Ottawa area? If so, I could point you to some shortcuts to information on these families. I'd like to incorporate parts of our e-mail correspondence, some records I have here, and some of your GEDCOM file into a web page. I'll put both our e-mail addresses on it. There are quite a few people researching these families, so you will probably, at some time, get e-mail from them. Before I link this new page to "Bytown or Bust" maybe you can take a look at it and make sure you're comfortable with it. I'll try to put it up today or tomorrow. By the way, I found the census record for the Berrigan in 1861. He lived with the Mathew Sullivan family (related to me) and was named Joseph. He was born c. 1840. ... Al
A James KEALEY, born in Ireland in 1815 died Jan 15, 1879 in Osgoode Township. (Death record at Museum).
From Taylor Kennedy: I read the notes from Michael LaFrance in regards to Bergin, Kealey etc. There are 2 more Dennis Bergin in St. Patricks Cemetery and this guy is older. - Dennis Bergin b. 1819 d. Sept. 14, 1895 at 96 years and his wife Catherine Nash b. 1831 d. Sept 07, 1913 at the age of 82 - Dennis Bergin b. 1894 d. 1960 married to Stella Houlahan. (see below) He also mentioned Mary Kealey. Mary Kealey b. 1842 d. Mar 22, 1905 at the age of 63 yrs. married to John MONAHAN b. 1829 d. Feb 08, 1924 age 95 yrs. Also buried with them are the following; -John Jr. d. Jan 24, 1916 age 37 yrs. -Annie L. MONAGHAN Jun 18, 1884 - Mar 22, 1966 -Bridget MONAGHAN Mar 04, 1863 - Oct 21, 1947 His also said St Patricks did have any register of certain marriages. I found the same because some of the Kennedys such as William and Elizabeth Carroll married at St. Patricks in Ottawa. Just a thought.
Dennis Bergin/ Stella Houlahan are my grand parents. They had 7 children (8 actually the first born was a boy who died a crib death he was only a few months old. The other 7 were 6 girls and 1 boy, the names are Rita, Mary,Evelyn, Joe, Doreen, Theresa, and Kay. Mary, Theresa, and Joe have passed on. Rita (Macdougal), Evelyn(Perdue), live in Ottawa, Doreen(Mahon) lives in Calgary and Kay I think lives in southern Ontario. I'm the oldest son of Joe, He had 3 sons and daughter. If you need any more info feel free to contact me Rick Bergin, Winnipeg November 7, 2001 Good day: Update to Denis and Stella Bergin, Grandfather Denis Bergin was son of James Bergin and Elizabeth Lynch, James Bergin was son of Denis Bergin and Catherine Nash from Templemore in the county of Tipperary ... Rick Bergin
November 11, 2001: Hey Rick Hope you received my info. this morning. Here's another tid bit of information. I have certain sheets from the 1871 census for Nepean. I looked for Bergin, which I don't have, BUT, I do have Lynch, and check this out closely. I'll scan tommorrow and send you a copy. Elizabeth Lynch was born according to the tombstone in 1868. The following census shows the same Elizabeth who will be 4 years old in her next birthday, thus she was born also in 1868. They are family # 143. Family # 144 is Edward Hawley, father of Jane Ann Hawley, mother of Stella. Family # 145 is my gggreat aunt Judy (Judah) Kennedy and Roderick Hawley. All living very close to one another. So here it is broken down. James Lynch's dau. Elizabeth married James Bergin and has Dennis. James Lynch's neighbour, Edward Hawley's daughter, Jane Ann Hawley marries James Houlahan and has Stella. Both neighbour children grow and wed. How does that saying go, what are neighbours for?? Take care for now Taylor Kennedy 1871 census for District 78, Carleton County, sub District A4, Township of Nepean, page 45, enummerated by Daniel O'Grady. Lynch, James - 40 Lynch, Catherine - 31 Lynch, John - 14 Lynch, James - 12 Lynch, Mary A. - 11 Lynch, Bridget - 9 Lynch, Patrick - 8 Lynch, Catherine - 6 Lynch, Joseph - 5 Lynch, Elizabeth - 4 Lynch, Martin - 2

From Kathy Adamson, November 11, 2001: I began research on the Bergin lines back in 1988 and put them aside while I pursued other lines. I was in touch with many of the relatives up there. Now there were Bergin and Berrigan families living in Nepean, while the name is related in Ireland I do not believe the Berrigans were related in Nepean. You will find Bergin spelled differently in records maybe because of French priests. I have found that the families first attended mass in St.Phillip, in Richmond Village and the records there are very good. In the early days you will find them at Notre Dame,Ottawa this micro film is badly faded, torn pages, and missing years, add to that the priest did not enter parents names on early marriages.Local Family History Library (LDS) has Notre Dame Cathedral on film (#1301761 1824-47. 1301762 1848-55,1301763 1862-75) these records also available on inter library loan from PAC. St.Patrick,Fallowfield,St.Phillip,Richmond and early census returns available at FHL. You can also check the land index for deaths. Here is the family plot at Notre Dame Cemetery James Kealey 1818-1895 his wife Ellen Byers Hugh Kealey 1868-1931 his wife Margaret Houlahan Cassie Kealey 1859-1905 Evelyn Kealey 1911-1974 James Kealey Jr. 1898- his wife Violet Flemming 1904- Patrick Kealey 1900-1975 his wife Anastasia Bisley 1908-1964 Hugh Kealey Jr. 1908-1973 his wife Frances Morgan 1912- I am working these families to be published in a book if you want to have your up date info included get in touch with me. November 18, 2001 From Mitchell LaFrance: For the records of Denis Bergin/Mary Kealey, I have information for several prior generations that actually links the vast majority of Bergins in the Nepean area. I only included 4 generations but can provide more if you're interested. I attached a picture of the tree in MS-Word. Let me know if you are not able to open it or zoom to see it properly. Note that the information also contains marriage information for the couple. ... Mitchell
