John and Catherine CLOSE
County Antrim, Ireland to Eastern Ontario, 1800's
McCabe List ML# 249
November 27, 2001
My GGGrandfather John Close and his wife Catherine were Irish immigrants to Canada.
They lived on a farm in South Gower. I believe that John was born in about 1796 and
died in 1880. We have no record of Catherine. The family story is that they settled in
Prescott and then moved to Ogdensburg, New York, USA in 1835.
Shortly after that they moved to South Gower - near Mountain Station Ontario.
We would like to know when they came to Canada. Were they in any of the Irish immigrant
family records that you have?

County Antrim. ... Al

Thank you Al.
I have reason to believe that he was from Antrim. There were many Closes in Antrim.
We have been unable to get his death, land records and will to prove it. We do know
that he came to Canada before the famine in Ireland. He owned land in South Gower.
(which is near the Rideau Canal).
He had two sons that I know of John born 9/3/1838 in Canada and William born about
1834. John (1838) and William emigrated to St Lawrence County New York, USA, in the 1860s.
They bought a 300 acre farm in Parishville / Colton, NY. John (1838) is my Great Grandfather.
John (1838) married Margaret Brown 1/26/1864 in Kemptville,Ontario. They had nine children.
Margaret Brown Close was born 3/3/1840 in Mountain Station, Ontario and was the daughter of
William Brown and Mary Keef (Keefe, O'Keefe) also of Mountain Station,Ontario .
William(1834)married Mary McLaughlin 6/12/1866 in Kemptville,Ontario. They had seven children.
If anyone can add to this information we would be very grateful. My Aunt Margaret is the last
of her generation at 88 and she has supplied me with much of the history. I would love
to be able to tell her where they came from in Ireland.
Thank you for your interest and help.
I will be changing email addresses after the first of the year. I will let you know my
new address when I can.

Canada. We found John Close and Annie Close's gravestone. We also found Elizabeth and
Mary's stone-all in Holy Cross cemetery-Kemptville-thanks to you.
We found that the stone also said that John was from Antrim- a fact that we were not
Our family is grateful for what you did.
