May 12, 2007: Thanks to Anne Burgess for this death certificate for Jeremiah Byrnes.
March 9, 2008 First off Al, thank you so much for your web site and all the work you do. It all becomes an obsession in the end! With all your help, I've tracked my dad(Garfield)'s dad = Lawrence. Lawrence's dad = Andrew (Andie Byrnes/Burns) and Andie's brother John across the street from the goulbourn museum...and their dad Jeremiah! I'm still working on all the other connections but I found something that may be of interrest to someone. The 1901 census shows a 2nd cousin visiting at the time of the census at Andrew Byrnes' farm. The name is unreadable but, turns out to be Benedict Fagan, his father=Michael Henry Fagan. As far as I can tell, there is only one of those, although as yet, I don't get the connection. So far my list of names include: Burns/Byrnes/Byrn etc Burrows Colligan Green Hanley/Hanly Maher McCavanagh McEvoy Mears/Myers Murphy O'Connell O'Meara Tierney Travers I wish I had listened more closely when my dad had droned on about all the Ancients. Gary Burns _____________________________ Hi Gary: Thanks very much for your e-mail. It's good to hear from another researcher of the early Byrnes / Burns in this area. Do you mind if I add your e-mail to our page at www.bytown.net/byrnejeremiah.htm. I'd also like to add your list of surnames, most of whom are familiar in the records f St. Philip's at Richmond. Please let me know. By co-incidence, this morning I loaded up a page for Anne Burgess regarding a Michael Fagan on the Fernbank Road in Goulbourn, not far from the Andrew Burns farm at Stanley's Corners. Benedict Fagan must have been from this family. Also, I believe that an Andrew Burns saved the records from a fire at Wesley Methodist Church (now Stittsville United Church, corner of Fernbank and Main Street Stittsville) possibly in the 1870's? I'm also sending a copy of this e-mail to Anne Burgess and Robert Sample. Thanks again for your e-mail! ... Al Lewis
April 2, 2008: Thanks to Robert Sample for the following: Hello to everyone. I was working on a family and found that a male member had married a Byrne. I was interested and started checking it all out and found a Burns family west of Rathwell's Corners, now Stanley's Corners, Goulbourn in the Belden & Co. Atlas. Here is what I have been able to come up with so far. Remember, this work is still in the early stages of development.

March 5, 2009: Gary Burns here, I thought this photo might be of interest to you. It's from St Pat's church in downtown Ottawa. Men from the parish in ww2. My dad and uncle are on the list. My niece who's in high school sent it to me. It's just so wonderful to think that there are young ones ready to take over the hunt. Gary Volunteers for World War 2 from St. Patrick's Basilica, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Burns men on the above commemoration list: James Burns, Kenneth Burns, Robert Burns, Douglas Burns, Lawrence Burns and G.H. Burns. ____________________________ also posted on March 5, 2009, from Gary: In the photo below, my dad is gh burns and his brother Lawrence. Both dead now and many answers gone with them. Dad's mom was a Mary Tierney. The Tierney farm was right where the Richmond Road turns sharply north of St Pat's church. I'll send a pic of the Tierney family around 1900. Also a pic of uncle Joe Brophy and me. Jeremiah's farm was just west of the Goulbourn museum at Stanley's Corners. The farm was taken over by son Andrew Byrne (buried at St pat's). His son Lawrence Hudson Burns is my grandfather. Lawrence changed the name to Burns. Of course Jeremiah's farm house is long gone, thus the hunt for air photos. Don't know where he's buried yet. Out in the back 40 for all I know. ... Gary Picture of G.H. Burns and Lawrence Burns ______________________________ Hi Al, Gary, and Sue: A while back, I was suggesting to Al that the Byrne family at http://www.bytown.net/byrnemargaretfw.htm might be some connection to Jeremiah Byrne. Margaret was from the Coolattin Estate, County Wicklow during the famine. (see http://www.bytown.net/wicklowemigrants.gtm) Maybe a long shot, but the son John Byrne who m. Mary O'Connor appears in the Fallowfield - St. Patrick's RC Church in Nepean Township, city of Ottawa) records for his children's baptisms. Would you know of that couple in your Byrne family, Gary, or if they lived near your Byrnes? John's brother, Patrick, who married Mary Headen / Hayden in 1858 at St. Pat's, had as a best man a Lawrence Burns and Joanna Kennedy. If John Byrne (who m. Mary O'Connor) was a connection to your Jeremiah, then the Lawrence Burns who was best man for Patrick might be yours, as well. And...if all that should be so, then we'd know where in Wicklow your Byrnes came from. (There were lots of Lawrence Byrnes in the Clonmore records, by the way.) I have two Kitley Byrnes (John (m. Ann Tierney) and James (m. Margaret Gilchrist) who are a longstanding puzzle for me, but I'll try them on you later. John Byrne and Ann Tierney had children baptized while they were living in Marlborough Township (pre-Kitley). ... Anne Burgess _________________________________ from Gary: Sorry, there is no connection I can see. About 5 yrs ago I was at the Goulbourn museum hunting and found the enlistment record for Jeremiah. My old ragged notes say he enlisted at Palmeston 3/19/1816 and was born in Baltinglass, County Wicklow. _________________________________ back to Anne: Thanks, Gary. #8 on the map below is Baltinglass, and Wicklow people came to the Rideau canal area from the numbers around the curve (44, 43, etc.) A lot of them came to Bytown and Gloucester from #48, Mullinacuff (the civil parish). The RC parish is called Clonmore. It would be no distance across that bit of Carlow. (note: I have not included the map here ... Al) ... Anne __________________________________ Here's some more good news from Gary. He made a trip to the Federal Energy, Mines and Resources Department here in Ottawa, (maybe called National Resources Canada now), and has tracked down an aerial photo from 1945 showing his ancestors' farm. These aerial photos will be really useful! For example, we can locate properties for the year 1879 using the digitized Belden Maps. Then we can look for aerial photos from the 1920's or from 1945 of the same properties. This covers the time before the tremendous urban sprawl which occurred from the 1960's up to the present -- the suburbanization of the townships which are now part of the city of Ottawa. Finally, using Google maps and current aerial photos available through Google, we can see what the farm properties look like today. Here's Gary's e-mail: Success!!!!! I got a copy of an air photo from 1945 showing the farm house. It's where the 1879 Belden map shows the house to be. Too bad for me that it's the earliest available for the Byrne farm but.... they have photos from the early 1920's for much of the area. I only had 45 minutes to spend there. It's amazing stuff. You can get stereo images, and oblique photos (bird's eye views). YOU HAVE TO GO THERE! Bring change for the meter. 615 Booth Street.. They were so helpful, they love their work. I won't be getting my scanner working till next week. I'll send you a copy. Al, it is like a time machine. web site is http://airphotos.nrcan.gc.ca/hist_e.php You can't view samples for that area online. You have to go there. They have ALL of the photos in shelves. Free to look at. Maybe 20.00 a pop to buy. A bargoon at twice the price. This is a really good day for me! Gar
